you don't even have to have good water quality with damsels. i had yellow tails that spawned regularly and my dusky's did about every 3 weeks for 3 or 4 yrs till the male died, the female continues to spawn But she's helped out by a female tomato clown, they are a sight to see.
as far as telling the sex of each, the only way i could tell with the yellow tails was by watching, the female laid the eggs, the male fertilized them with the dusky the female is considerably smaller and has a more round shape, the male has/had a flat faced oval body. good luck with your endeavors, i never was able to rear the larvea, they are so small they can't even eat S strain rotifers.
