breeding eels

Really don´t think so. Looooong larval period.
Don´t know about spawning though...
Anderson.

Wolf eels !! Well... not really an eel, more of a long & skinny dottyback, but you can call it one if you want to

From Scott Michaels Reef Fishes Vol 1 :

" I have not found any reports in the literature concerning moray eels spawning in captivity, but it is a possibility in a very large aquarium."

Spawning absolutely.
Even I had a pair of Zebra eels that spawned regularly, collected tons of eggs- but never got anywhere.
AS for rearing the fry- I've not even seen it done -in print or otherwise.
Now green wolf eels -sure thing

Was the problem with feeding the larvae? ,, or were the eggs not hatching?

got plenty of eggs to hatch.
The larvae started dropping from day 3 on. Never got any to survive. I want to say I tried everything I could get my hands on (didn't have ss strainRots or copepod nuplii at the time) but it never matter- never asaw any of them eat, althou some looked as thou they were striking. The eels would spawn almost once /month

zebras switch sexes, larger established one is a male.
I had a larger zebra in my tank for approx 1 yr, I found a smaller yet healthy zerba and introduced. They lived in a 180 gal display full of lions approx 100lbs of very large live rock.
They ate 3-4 times week 3-4 shrimp each feeding. It took about 6 months before they were inseperable, and w/in 1 yr started doing the dance (intertwined at night swimming quikly around the tank-male grasping the jaw of the female, rising up in the tank etc)

Oh Man, that may have been really intersting to watch the dance !

Just went to fishbase and saw they are protogynous. ;) I always ask before go searching... sorry for that.
The batch was an egg mass or thousands of loose eggs ?
You tried L-rots and BBS. Anythinhg more ?

Ihave not passed the standpipe building part and am asking about breeding morays... Who do I think I am ? :D :D

Thanks Frank,
Anderson.

Anderson, by the time all the eggs ended up in my filter sock they were loose eggs.
They floated I'll telll you that much
Yes I tried L, and S Rots, artemia nauplii, FW daphnia, prawn eggs,a bunch of stuff, I think I got 8 spawns out of them in 1 yr, then they just stopped

I have an idea, probablly worthless...

If I were you I would try and get my hands on a pair of eels that have the smallest ntural geographical solution, in my mind this means less time as a palegic larvae, therefore "possibly" more concieveable to raise..

Like I said probabally not worh much but just and idea

No experiance with having eels but did live in Hawaii and would find all the babies 5" and below in the rocks (above the water line) just enough to keep moist, like a salamander under a damp log. I even caught a baby Dragon eel up there once. (almost 20 years ago) Maybe they eat something off the stone bottoms.

That is interesting, I once watched an eel at the waterline in Anguilla, it was a rocky shorline and the eel was spending as much time out of the water crossing over the rocks as it was in the water swimming. I thought it odd at the time. From looking at pics I'm guessing it was a Chain Moray? It was around 18-20".

David you know what anguila means in Spanish?:D
In the hardest to impossible marine fish larva to raise contest, eels are hands down sure winners!
The pelagic eggs hatch into larvae nobody could raise. They then change to a strange leptocephalus larva which drifts for ages on the seas, and it is not clear if they feed at all!.
Japanese love (to eat)eels and dedicated tons of funds/research to breed them. They could have them spawn with hormones but could not raise the larvae. The only food that worked for some time on one occasion was a paste of shark eggs!:eek2:

Yes Luis I do know what Anguilla means in Spanish. ;) I was on that long & skinny God forsakened island for 9 months. The only thing that made it bearable is that St Maartin is a 20 minute ferry ride away :D Nude beaches and French food, now that's the way to spend your weekends :D Oh and the cuban cigars are a nice bonus :smokin:

Funny thing,I like to go to St.Martin and once found a spotted eel, about a yard long,in knee-deep water off the jetty of Orient Beach!
I was thinking of visiting Anguilla some time,it lies so close!
But you say there are no nude beaches there? Nor French food?. And you have to drive at the left side of the road? Why should people wish to go there?

( Taking over the thread) ...
Luis, I wouldn't even have mentioned Orient Beach as I can't imagine many here would know about that glorious liitle stretch of sand. THAT is life at it's best; the beauty, the service, the food, (the boobs) ;) If you know of a better place to spend time please let me know.
As for Anguilla, they are shooting for $$$$$$$ tourism and have only 5 star hotels & resorts. They want to be St Barths but lack the beauty. They want to be an offshore banking mecca but lack the infrastructure. There is NOTHING there worth the ferry ride. I was one of the contractors (electrical) building the Cuisinart Resort in 98/99.

My wife is over my shoulder now, all she wants to know is if the Butterfly Farm is still there

I never heard about it:confused:
The eel I found was a Goldspotted snake eel (Myrichthys ocellatus)

B-fly farm, very near Orient Beach. Pretty cool, big screen tent with 100's of species breeding in there. Koi ponds, beautifully planted. Lost to a hurricane in '98 but I believe they rebuilt. I forget the name of that storm but it stalled for 60 hours as soon as the eye wall was on us. 60 hours in the wall, Tuesday afternoon to Friday morning, that was fun
