Breeding like Cardinals

Had another batch of Cardinals the other day & thought I would upload some pics. This is the biggest batch so far and was about 35 of the little chaps. I was able to catch the dad and make him spit the babies out in to a bucket, of which then I transfered then to a nursery nano, of which already holds some of his brothers/sisters from another batch that are about 1" long/3 months old.

This is the older lot.

I plan to set up a bigger tank sectioned off to allow the raising of all batches instead of the odd batch here and there. The only trouble is getting rid of them as i dont want to send them via mail.

Nice job, well done :) I wish mine would kick 'em out like that. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to sell them locally, I know several people over there that could probably send you in right direction if your'e interested.

Thanks. Even though the UK is not as big as the States, it still can take 6 or 7 hrs to get to places. I know not exactly a road trip, but all takes time & therefore the part where i live limits me to possible buyers.

To get the dad to release his kids, I catch the dad, keep him netted up and keep lifting him out of the water, eventually he will flap about & release the babies in one hit.

Dark_stragner,

Great pics, glad to see that there are some other UK reefers breeding these little chaps.

Where abouts in Kent are you?

What are you feeding the adult pair on, i am still only managing to get around 6 everytime he drops, but then I am also not forcing the issue at the moment.

SPK, I think we have briefly spoken on another UK forum. I am from near Margate, infact about 5 mins from Scoob of UR. I dont have a specific food plan, they eat anything, even large sheets of nori that only just fits in their mouths. I do try and feed the male more as he doesnt eat when carrying and the female is on his case again as soon as he has released the babies. Ideally, would like a tank to put him in so that he can build up his energy again before she jumps him again. This last batch, there only seems to be about 10 left, whether they died naturally or the old cardinals have eaten them, i dont know, but am seriously thinking about setting something up in the shed to raise them instead of a little nano tank in the kitchen.

Have you managed to raise any of the babies? what did you do with them? i normally sell mine, but the misses does get to atttached to them. Maybe I should give her another kid or then again... baby cardinals will have to do :D

Hey there,

Thanks for the response.

Yes I am on my third or fourth successful batch of babies, about 16 in total. My male only seems to drop around 8. I have lost 2 of these to wrong food and then one of them was eaten by one of the older group I had.

I grow them on in the sump under the main tank, but am looking for new brood stcok for the tanks that I have in the shed.
All of mine I am selling to an LFS up the road from me, that has comitted to take as many as I can get. If you need an outlet let me know.

Currently the male is carrying agian and I plan to delvier the next 6 to the LFS this weekend.
