My basic idea for my fish breeding project is to have 6-9 tanks in a recirculating system through a filter sump. I am going to be concentrating on clownfish but I would like to also try some other species as well. Fish I hope to breed include oscellaris, percula, onyx, clarkia, maroon, neon goby, yellow watchman goby and yellow head jawfish. Yes quite a collection but these are long term plans. Any comments or suggestions would be great but would like to know if all of this is being done correctly.
The basic idea is to use 50 litre tanks drilled with a back overflow draining into the sump. The tanks will receive their water by a large pump from the sump and taps will regulate the water flow into each tank in order to maintain an even distribution of flow through the system. My original idea was to use Rubbermaid tubs or similar however I have been warned that clowns need natural light. Why is this? Could I use black tubs and provide artificial light? The tanks need also to be big enough to hold maroon and clarkii pairs so maybe these two tanks will need to be bigger. Do the tanks themselves need LR or can I Just put some pots and tiles in them? What will they need? Otherwise I will be placing an aragonite sand bed and LR in the Sump. Otherwise the sump will hold a skimmer. What other filtration will be best? I know various people use trickle filters but will the protein skimmer not be sufficient as long as I perform 25% water changes weekly.
I intend buying some adult oscellaris soon from the local LFS as they are of an adult size and try to pair them with small clowns which will hopefully still be males. The big oscellaris clowns are about 8cm so what size should I pair them up with? I will obviously have to quarantine these fish so the whole recirculating system will be put on hold until I can be sure that there are no diseases. I intend keeping pair by pair in a 12 gallon nano which has a filter built in.
Do you think I need a trickle filter, mechanical and LR(biological) filtration? Do I need them all because it would be easier with LR and skimmer only?
Will 50 litres be too small for clowns to breed?Maroons and clarkia might need more.
Do larval systems have to be round and if so where do you find them?
Is it better to remove the eggs or can you use the torch method to get the fry?
