Bright Red algae in my BB reef

I too have some and have a shallow sand bed, I will be going BB in my upgrade in a couple of months, but would really like to know what I could add to eat that.

No I'm not kidding. :D

That's the only algae in my display tank (ok maybe a few valonia too). If I get rid of that stuff, man would I be happy!

I wonder if this is the same stuff. Ignore the tort and look at the rock.

I've had a few discussions with people and a bunch of us seem to have it, BB, DSB doesn't matter. I don't know anyone one has been able to get rid of it. I've got some astreas that seem to eat it, but only off of certain rock. Other areas they won't touch it at all.

Not sure if anyone is using blue leg hermits. I would think all my snails would be toast if I added a hundred hermits to the tank.
That is the same algae Joe yes the Astreas eat it some but not all.

Well Doug (the urchin not the one with the reef tank he's named after) eats mine.
Bomber, Yes the algae started to grow when my urchin when back to the LFS i had it over a year.
I had no choice the Urchin was releasing milky substance in the tank water all of the time.
It was so much i had to do allot of water changes.

I'm with you Zoom. I have that same stuff that JBNY posted. I've had regardless of whether I was running SSB, DSB, or BB. I even cooked my rock and it still came back. I can't add an urchin because my tank is acrylic and I don't like hermits because they molest my snails.

I should note that my number 1 eater of this stuff is my PB tang. He nibbles at it all day long but this stuff is just too tuff for him to completely eradicate it.

I should also note that I don't like emeralds because they like to eat my sps polyps.

How does everyone feel about sally light foots?

Thank you,
Yes my PB and Yellow try to keep it under control but grows places they can not get to .

I've got it in my overflow, none at all in the display. I have a foxface.......no hermits in the tank.

I've had sucess with the exact same algae (altho not as copius) with mexican turbos.

I put 2 in my 90g and in 2 months, no more algae. I also upped my cerith and astreas by 20 each.

They get to big to get in between the SPS corals and eat it.

what urchin are you guys refering to ?

Here is from Marine depot live Web page.
Longspine Black Urchin - Diadema savignyi
Also known as: Blue Eye Urchin
The Longspine Black Urchin may grow to 3 (not counting spines) inches. Herbivore. The Diadema savignyi is generally peaceful toward other tankmates. Reef-safe with caution - may eat corals. Many consider the Diadema savignyi a medium-maintenance specimen. Venomous, spines are slightlypoisonous Coralline algae eater. Ultra-sensitive to alkalinity changes, and will be venomous if it dies. Be careful with copper-based medication and extreme nitrate levels. Keep water quality high (SG 1.023 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78Ã"šÃ‚° F).

IME, upping the astrea and ceriths won't do the trick. I have about 300 astreas and about 500 ceriths in my 280. The algae is more sporadic and isn't really noticable from a distance but it is there. I also have a foxface and sailfin who try to nibble at it but I don't think their mouths are strong enough to tear it off.

travis,
did u try sea hare...i know they look ugly...:)))
i have this type of algae for about a year ...i tryed everything, the only black urchin who is gonna touch it...
i just add a sea hare,,wanna see if this helps:))
