Bright Red algae in my BB reef

i've got mine under control with a couple of urchins.

my purple and achilles tang pick at it but don't do much damage.
I had some urchins but they get big and start to spawn in the tank .
But yes they did good job on the red algae and coralline.
Here is a new picture of it .

My red algae appears to be receeding. It's not spreading anymore up the glass and has started to disappear off the rocks. My clean-up crew must be doing something right. I added 4 large mexican turbo snails. Perhaps they are eating it at night?

I have 25 large Maxicans some of then 2" around you see the picture ;) i still have the red.

Mine finally went away in about a month. My rocks were totally covered. at the same time macro algae in the prop tank and some bryopsis in the main tank started to grow.. Maybe these two starved the red turf.

the urchins do get big fast... faster than anything i've ever seen. i have a tuxedo and a blackspine. how big were they when they started to spawn?

My PBT had been keeping mine in check. After I had to remove it, the red algae took over all the rocks very quickly. I then added a few more tangs. One of them being an achilles. The achilles mowed it down like there was no tomorrow. IME, the acanthurus species of tangs have the right feeding behavior to keep this algae in check. Other herbivorous fish don't seem to have small enough or strong enough mouths to get the job done.

I am pretty sure I too have been battling the same stuff. My tank is too small for a tang and the snails and blue legs don't seem to want to touch the stuff. My only weapon so far is to try to keep it under control manually.

JB, Zoom does yours turn a bright orange/red as your SPS encrusts near it?

mine mostly grows on my PVC plumbing. none on the rocks. not sure if that is because the snails and hermits dont' hit those parts as much. but when i pull all my coraline off my PVC the algae that grew on the coraline comes righ off.

Mine never grow near any of my SPS. Most of it is at the back of the tank and the front right side at the very high flow areas.
JBNY my get about 1/2" long and very hard to scrape it off I try I just give up. it seems like the better and cleaner the water is the nicer it grows.
When my anemone spawn in my tank two times in a week (I lost many SPS) the red algae almost disappear , I got the tank near normal now and the red Algae stated to make a good come back.

Mine grows real short 1/4" or less. I've had it for a few years so at this point it's everywhere.

Zoom: That looks like my algae!! I have posted about this several times but this is the first"real" feedback...Thanks. Sorry, no pics but It is very hard, same texture as coraline. It can be scraped off but impossible to get it all and it has been going nuts over the last few months. As I said, I used to call on LFS's and often saw it in mature tanks but not like in my systems or yours. If you magnify mine, it looks like "pixils", little dots. It only started going crazy when I switched to Oceanic salt a year or so ago and is in 2 tanks with different lights, filtration, etc. Both use carbon and R/O water. I am moving on Sunday and may just bleach out 200LBS to be rid of it.

To be honest, i have the same problem right now...i have the same outcome and have tried everything, its very fast growing...was told to use alot of carbon!
See if that helps....
i know, crame all the corals in a small tank...keep the lights off and lower the temp.....see if that stops it!

OK, old dead thread. I know.

Just a question for those of you who are still around...did anyone ever have any luck getting rid of this stuff? It's exactly what I've been dealing with for a few months, and nothing has helped.

Tell me that one of you had some success.

I'm using alot of mexican red legged hermit's and a virgatus. They are slowly beating it back. I still remember getting the snail's that introduced this stuff to my tank, now it's about everywhere.

Still have bright red algae just as much, nothing kill it, or eat it but is not taking over the reef any way.
Here is a new picture look in the back of the reef.
