Brook in QT

Hi,

I have had a midas blenny in QT for 2 weeks and he's fine. On Saturday I added 2 clowns to the QT and both died within 48 hours due to Brook.

right now, the blenny looks fine and is eating, but I'm concerned that he will have contracted Brook from the clowns

I'm currently treating the QT with Chloroquine Phosphate since Sunday.

So, what are my options for the Blenny and the QT.

Should I just wait and see if the Blenny starts showing symptoms, or should I assume that he has Brook and treat him with a Formalin dip (outside the QT) ?

If I treat him with Formalin, won't he just get reinfected when I put him back in the QT ?

I would really appreciate some advice on this as I want to do my best for the little guy

To my knowledge CP will not cure brook. You have some options...
1. Preferably put him in a new sterile QT. If not then do a huge water change to eliminate as many of the parasites as possible. Then just wait and watch for ANY signs of brook.
2. Begin formalin dips now. Since he is not showing signs yet you could get away with doing 3 dips every other day. If you go this route put the fish in a new sterile QT after each dip.

IME I put the fish in a new QT and watched it. It never showed signs of brook. Brook is typically associated with clowns but other fish do get it.

I would continue CP treatment for 4 weeks @ 60mg/g to ensure the parasite is eradicated.

Is that 60mg per gallon pure CP ?.

I'm currently using a malaria tablet called Avloclor which is 250mg and 155mg CP. My QT is approx 75 litre (20 US gallons) and I've so far dosed 5 tabs on day 1, 5 more on day 5 (this is when the 2nd clown died) and 3 on day 6 (yesterday) as I was panicking and I read that fluorescent light reduces it's effectiveness so I upped the dose. I now plan another 5 on day 11 and a final five on day 16 and I've reduced my lighting period. Does this seem about right ?

Right now, the Blenny looks fine (touch wood) and is eating and swimming about with no marks on him. I'll continue with the CP as recommended for now and monitor

Yes, the 60mg/g (15mg/l) is pure CP. Since you are using tablets that have filler, you'll need to calculate based on the amount of CP in each tablet. For 60mg/g, you'll need 7.74 tablets total. You don't need to redose, though. CP is a "one and done" medication. Right now, you are at almost double the dosage given the number of tablets you have dosed. I would do a water change to get the concentration down to the appropriate amount. While there have not been many studies about CP's toxicity in fish, everything I have read states that you should not exceed 80mg/g.

Fluorescent light does not affect CP; only UV light denatures it.

Thanks again for your advice. Do you know if live rock will absorb the CP. I have about 3kgs in my QT right now.

I wonder about the LR as I did notice that after my first dosage of CP that a fan worm that I had in there lost it's fan and I thought it had died, but then 4 or 5 days later, it started to appear again from it's tube.

It is unknown whether LR will absorb CP or not. Best to use only inert items in a QT/HT, especially since there is a not a simple test for CP in solution (unless you have access to a spectrophotometer).
