Brooklynella life cycle

i had a clown die of brooklynella a few weeks ago and was wondering if it is safe to put another clown in the tank now or if it will fall victim too. Is it similar to ich in that a healthy fish can fight it off? How long will it take to rid my tank of it if i take all the fish out? Will it die without a host or can it survive a long time in the tank without fish present.
