Brooklynella? - Treatment

I read in Joyce Wilkerson Clownfishes book that a freshwater dip is the treatment. I read formalin is also good. This fish is in my brookstock system. Apparently I didn't QT long enough. Unfortunately it's one of my spawning pairs. Do I treat the system or just the fish?

All the fish in the system need to be treated with formalin and leave it fallow for 6 weeks. Check the sticky for Brook, that book has dated information. Much better information out there with a quick search.

Seems to be brook, but can't tell for sure. Poor clown

I read that trauma can bring this on. I will admit that on sunday night, I turned the system lights back on, after they turned off to keep my light timing. (damn daylights saving time). This particular fish freaked out big time. It was hiding for hours. I'm wondering if this contributed to this issue.

Are any of the other clowns showing similar symptoms? Is it still eating well? Can you post a closeup photo?

Trauma or stress does not bring on brook. The parasite must be present for it to manifest. Stress will lower the immune system which will enable a disease to overtake the fish. Formalin dips are standard. If no formalin use Quick Cure readily available at Walmart. FW dips will buy you, at most a day, until you can get formalin.

Some of the fish are losing appetite, but they still attack live brine shrimp. No visible signs I was attributing the appetite loss to me spoiling them with the shrimp - which I know happens. The little guy died while I was on my way to Petco for medicine. Picked up Kordon's Ich Attack - it was the only thing that sounded like it might work. Couldn't find any formalin. Wish I knew about the Walmart brand before I left. See attached pics of the little dead guy. What do I do now? This is a 5 pair broodstock system. Do I medicate the whole setup?

Sorry about your loss. I think if you do not take it seriously and act fast, there will be more casualties. You need to QT all fish and use a known cure. I used Ick Attach before and it seemed to help a bit but was never a cure. I wouldn't waste my money on it again.

Since you don't have Formalin, I would suggest the use of a FW dip for 10-15 min after adjusting PH and Temp and aerating well. I'd keep a close eye on the fish and terminate the procedure if it gets in trouble. This provides an immediate relief and removes some of the slime coat off the gills, which helps with respiration. I have had great success eradicating many protozoans, but I repeated the procedure a few times. Hope you can catch the fish.:fish1:

So I should do a few bath on each fish even if it shows no symptoms? Is that true once I get my hands on the formalin.

FW dips of five minutes is fine. Be sure to aerate the water for at least 30 minutes. This is the biggest reason fish don't tolerate a dip for long. I would move them into a new tank after each dip (like TT) otherwise you will just reinfest them.
Agree on the Ich Attack...useless.

How do I disinfect my system?

What is TT? From reading, I guess i need to Fallow the tank, which means to have it remain fishless. How is this different from breaking down the tank and starting over. I'm guessing that is risky because the disease needs to die, it could remain in broken down system.

Fallow means no fish. For brook, that would be six weeks. Tank transfer only works to eliminated ich.

So I will do the formalin dip on all fish, and put them in holding tanks.
Can I drain, disinfect, and restock the tank with new water. I have biological sponges from unaffected tanks that I can use to re-seed. If so, i supposed i should just dump my fuge and remote deep sand bed, and start that over. This isn't a reef, so I don't have anything at risk from tearing down the tank and starting over - no live rock, no display to speak off, just pots.

Seems better than going 6 weeks with fish in multiple standalone holding tanks.

Bottle prescribes water changes, and a second dosage 10 days later to catch anything the first dose didn't catch, and then additional water changes. There is nothing but fish in this tank, so I don't see the value in letting it fallow if I can just kill the protozoans. The good news is that two of my clown pairs in this system are getting ready to lay, so that means they aren't significantly infected at this point.

I medicated the 2 day version. 2 drops per gallon No physical signs showing currently. Need to medicate again tomorrow. Water changes also soon. All stores in my area no longer carry formalin including walmart who used to carry quick cure. Even local fish stores don't have it. Luckily my Lfs still had some. I ordered a big bottle of 37% to keep for future.
