Brooklynella? - Treatment

I medicated the 2 day version. 2 drops per gallon No physical signs showing currently. Need to medicate again tomorrow. Water changes also soon. All stores in my area no longer carry formalin including walmart who used to carry quick cure. Even local fish stores don't have it. Luckily my Lfs still had some. I ordered a big bottle of 37% to keep for future.

That's good news.:bounce1: Keep an eye on Ammonia though as formalin might affect your biological filter of the tank.

I'm getting mixed messages on the water change. LFS said formalin is only active for 24 hours in a tank. So why do I need to do a water change? Is that because inactive formalin is bad?

Its because if Formalin kills enough beneficial bacteria from your biological filter, then Ammonia will start rising and a water change becomes necessary to control ammonia.

Will do the 2nd treatment. To be honest, I only ever test for nitrate, salinity, ammonia (badge). Does a uv sterilizer kill brook? Wondering if I should invest for prevention.

UV sterilizers are excellent life takers. They kill everything that passes through. The downside is: not everything passes through them so the protozoans that don't pass through would multiply and the problem persists. They do however limit their number, limit harmful bacteria, and help with water clarity by controlling single-cell algae. That said, they are good to have in your system, but they are not clean cut for what you want them for.

I also think that if your treatment is successful, you should not worry about Brook until you add a new guest to your tank, unless of course you QT first.

Would you expect formalin to negatively impact my other breeders from spawning. They are new spawners, but they were on a schedule. Again, no physical sign of disease including respiratory. Everything looks ok.
