Brown algae and lighting

In the event of an algae bloom is it better to crank the lights up or turn them off? It's probably diatoms but I can't tell yet.

Diatoms are going to go through a cycle before they go away. Check and see what is causing it. Your nitrates may be high or phosphate too. Need to leave lights on because if you turn them off, you are just prolonging the cycle.
