Brown algae

When I read about brown algae on sand bed one of the causes is older bulbs. If I run my hydra 26 on to long of a ramp time would that be the same as worn bulbs because of the lower intensity ?

No, the problem with old bulbs & algea isn't that they loose intensity. When they get worn out they shift spectrums to where they promote algea growth more

Most brown algea on the sandbed is eighther diatoms or dinos. It is hard to say without knowing more about your system & pics but, diatoms are common in newer tanks. It's one of the phases most tanks go through at a young age.

In a established system that is using good rodi water it is probably more common to get Dino's then diatoms. They have a strain of Dino that resembles diatoms on the sandbed & the only way to differentiate between the two would be with a microscope.

My tank is about 3 years old. I did slowly replace the entire sand bed. It had hardened like cement from doing 2 part dosing. Now that I have a dosing pump I don't have that problem. And I do use rodi water. Maybe sand bed is recycling

nitrate/phosphate levels?

Not sure when you replaced the sand bed but doing so could certainly trigger some diatoms,etc...

Yea, replacing the sandbed is probably what caused it & its more then likely diatoms. If that's what it is it should go away on its own soon. If it doesn't then I'm sure u can get plenty of help figuring it out but, u would need to post more about your system & the testing numbers.
