brown coating on substrate

there is a brown coating of something that has covered the whole substrate it doesent look like algae what could it be and how would i get rid of it?

prolly just diatoms. if your tank is new it will go threw a brief diatom phase. just try not to freak out and dont change anything and it should go away on its own. messing with it will just make it worse.

if its more blackish, and you dont think its algae, its could just be detritus...can be cleaned up by hermit crabs, sand conchs, olive snails, etc.
