Brown Growth In Tank

Hello I am new to saltwater tanks, complete noob. I'm tryin hard but I need help. This forum seems like the place to get it.

I have a 20 gallon tank, and I have a real porous rock i got from the fish store. I think this is what everyone is calling live rock. (again total noobie) They gave me live sand and a bottle of, i guess, liquid life of some sort : ) They told me to pour it in when i did the first water change and i would get growth on the rock.

I've had the tank for almost a month and have tan/dark brown growth from the top to the middle of the rock. I scraped the stuff off that grew on the glass. Anyway, is this good growth, or bad growth. Kinda nervous about it, please help.

Thank you/sorry for long post

Welcome to the hobby. :)

With the age of the tank I would assume you are having a diatom bloom which is part of the natural cycle. Pics would help verify for sure tho.

Do some research on anything you plan on doing and you will likely find someone (if not several) people that have been through the same thing. Pics are a major help in trying to determine illnesses, id, and issues.

FYI: Any "quick fix" is usually very bad in this hobby. There is a saying that the only thing to happen to a saltwater tank is disaster. Time and patience are the key. Most LFS owners are pretty good and honest but there are some just out for your cash and some of the workers have no first hand knowledge of how to really care for a tank.

After the diatom bloom would be the algae stage. I'd add a clean up crew at that time. Don't add fish or corals yet, and like Stroob said, patience! :)

I picked up three little snails. They're goin to town on it right now. Maybe they'll keep it under control a lil bit.
