Brown idaho grape cap?

Super Bad

New member
So I purchased a pretty good size of idaho grape cap from a LFS and it is now a lovely shade of brown (catch the sarcasm there?). I have moved it several times in hopes that it would help, but no luck. It seems healthy otherwise and has been in the tank for several months with some growth. I also have a lynxi (not sure on spelling) cap that is green with purple rim that is loosing the purple rim. I am out of ideas!!!! Please help. thanks in advance for any suggestions.

bad water conditions or lack of light, im leaning water conditions

mine went a little gray after a month more of a light purple, once I added the cal reactor and use a little essential elements the color popped right back in a week and half.

it was never brown though and color was only a hair off when i jumped on it

water are your water parameters, what kind of lights do you have and where is it placed?
just guessing, i'd have to agree with Outy on water being the culprit.

based on your description 'lynxi' should be 'Leng Sy'.

Thanks. I have a lumen bright pendant with a 250w pheonix 14k bulb with 2 24w t5 actinics. My water params are great, except for my nitrates that I was not able to check this month because I ran out and have not bought a new one yet. My guess is probably high nitrates as well just not sure. It has been just about every where in the tank and it now sits about 8 inches under the top of the water. Bulb is about 15 above water. Thanks again.

its your water as i stated.

you may have the cap to high in the tank but if you have nitrates you need to get that handled asap.

agreed, its the water. nitrates alone would make the corals turn brown. what are the details of your water params?

Anything too weird with my water params? nitrates may be a bit high, but not that bad I dont think. Thoughts?

anybody got ideas? could lighting be the issue or is a nitrate of 2 on a salifert test really that bad for sps. everything else looks great. please help!!!

do you have algae growing in the tank? problem with the tests is that they don't account for the nitrates and phosphates that are being consumed by the algae -- only what they have yet to consume or is currently available in the water column.

I dont have really any algae in the tank, I need to get some chaeto in my fuge soon though I think. I have a tiny bit of hair algae, and by tiny I mean hardly noticeable on one rock but that is it. Would the algae help that much. Sorry for all the questions just haven't had much experience with caps or SPS and none of my clients have them either just softies. Thanks in advance.

If there real amount of algae, then it wouldn't help that much. There still could be excess phosphates. How often do you do water changes?
How old is the bulb?

Its been running for about 5 months now, tank before that was up for about 3 years. I have not really had any other probs with the new tank just coloration. Thanks

growing corals that are turning browned out are most likely lighting. i completely disagree with anyone who said water was the issue. if the coral is showing signs of new growth and is not bleaching then light is most likely the issue. most often coral coloration is related to the spectrum of light being emitted. this is why so often people see something in the store and bring it home only to look boring in a few days.

I think your tank is not mature enough yet. Is the 3 year old tank the one the cap came from ? I also don't think your nitrate of 2 is that bad. Keep up with water changes and you should be OK. By the way what is the temperature of the tank ?

No it is new in this tank, everything else has doubled in size since the move to this tank. Temp stays between 78.5 and 80.2. Not much variance there I dont think. The caps are really the only thing to look different, polyps on them still com out though, just color is off. Thanks

off color but with polup extension def sounds like lights.

I woudl either give it some time (a few months) nd see if it colors back up

or

move it a tad lower in the tank

or

go with a higher K bulb
