Bryopsis explosion

Tank is a 265g setup since 11/1/07. Nitrates and phosphates both read 0 by salifert (algae is using it all I'm sure). Freshly mixed water has 0/0 nitrates and phosphates by salifert, so it isn't a problem with my RODI.

Tank was an upgrade. Lots of corals (LPS dominated). Very understocked fish load (2 oscellaris clowns and a sailfin tang).

Skimmer is bubble master 250. I skim a little wet. It has been skimming fantastically.

Tank is SSB started with mostly cooked dead rock and a little bit of seed rock. I think my big mistake was not cooking the rock long enough. It was so much rock I had to do it in batches. I rushed it. My fault.

I plan to hit this up from multiple directions. Any advice on tweaking my plans would be appreciated.

1. Water changes. 50g/week until this clears up.
2. Hand pulling. Gotta get out what I can!
3. Lettuce nudis. Have 3 on order. I know these aren't a panacea, but a little biological control can't hurt.
4. Considering phosban reactor. I've never needed one before, but if you guys think it will help I have no problem buying one (links to a great setup thread appreciated).
5. Refugium upgrades. I have a refugium now with some chaeto. It just isn't growing. Its being outcompeted by the bryopsis I'm sure. I'm going to upgrade the lighting (currently a pair of T5 bulbs). I'm thinking a halide (I occcasionally throw corals down there anyway, so good lighting is great). I'm also considering putting in a faster growing algae (caulerpa probably, suggestions appreciated though). I wouldn't remove the chaeto, just add a second algae.
6. Raising magnesium trick. I'd rather this be a last resort, but I'm keeping it in mind.

Any tweaks or advice is much appreciated. This stuff is an absolute nightmare.

Ya I read it, but thanks for the tip anyway. If I hadn't its an important thread. From my first post:

6. Raising magnesium trick. I'd rather this be a last resort, but I'm keeping it in mind.

I read it, but was a little nervous trying it. Since that first post I changed my mind. Mag currently at 1450 and rising via Kent tech-M. Wish me luck! :)

I would absolutely add a phosban reactor. They are cheap and efficient at removing phosphates. Warner Marine's Phosar is an excellent media to use. Just make sure you start with less than the recommended amount and monitor your Alk, as it can innitially cause a drop in Alk. Run the water through the reactor slowly. Just enough to barely tumble the top layer of the media. I would also raise magnesium to 1400-1450. Some people go higher, but you won't have any issues with 1400-1450.

+1 on Craig's suggestions here. Don't let the term "reactor" scare you. They are easier to set up and run than a protein skimmer.

Hi discocarp,

Sounds like you are on the right track. Bryopsis can be a real pain to rid from your reef.

Your best bets are the phosban reactor and I would strongly suggest raising Mg to the higher 1400's if not 1500. Hand removal as much as possible will really help get the process started too.

Raise the Mg slowly over a week or so and I believe that will help you greatly.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
