BTA not looking good.

I have a BTA and a mating pair of Gold striped Maroon Clownfish. I have had the BTA for about 2 months. He is not looking good. His mouth is closed and not leaking any fluid. The problem is that he will not hardly extend any of his tentacles. He hasn't moved in a long time, so it seems that he likes his spot. He will still accept food. I guess the question is that: What happend to his tentacles? I can honestly say that for a month that my nitrates have been in between 5 and 10. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions?

what and how often are you feeding it? sounds like it could be starving. is it shrinking too? or just tenicle loss?

I would say slowly dieing, you have a 5 month old tank and a 3 month old nem

feed him silverside pieces, small pieces, like your pinky fingernail size to start
do acouple small water changes over the week and get your nitrates down

i gurantee its the maroons, i had a 3 month old nem also, and RIGHT when i added my maroon pair they beat it up so bad!!!

Marine Snow doesn't count as feeding an anemone...they require substantial, meaty foods to survive...they are not filter feeders.

how big is the BTA compared to the maroons. i had a small BTA that was doing great for 2 months. then i added some maroons and slowly, it died. they really beat it up.

i now have a new BTA that is about 2 3/4-3 times as big as the female maroon. the BTA has been in the tank for about 2 wks. doing great.

if silversides don't work, maybe chopped sqiud, chopped up scallops? i noticed my BTA's tentacles were a little droopy, and it looked deflated overall. fed, plumped right up.

good luck!!

:D :D :D :D

this happened to me years ago w/ maroons, the host nem needs to be significantly larger than the fish or it will not survive the "love" that they show it.

I respectfully disagree with slakker. I do think they can filter feed somewhat.

I haven't fed my anemone's any meaty foods in maybe a year?
I do dose Liquid Life BioPlankton maybe once a week.

I also target feed the anemone's "reef roids." I bought this to see if it would work on my corals. I didn't notice any difference positive or negative to be honest. However, the mouths of the anemone's would open up real wide & they would move to try & catch the stuff.

So for the past 4 months or so, I target feed them this stuff.
I use one teaspoon of the stuff & mix it in a small cup with my existing tank water. I then target feed them with a turkey baster. They love this stuff....I think. It looks like they eat it. I don't feed them & they are alive & doing well so I assume they eat it.

I have also noticed that they catch formula 1 flakes when I just feed my tank normally.

I have had the original anemone for maybe 4+ years. I have 3 right now, one is the original. The other two are from a split. I lost a 4th when it got sucked into a pump. And another one just vanished one day shortly after a split.

In my opinon, the anemones seem to get stressed from eating so much food. Silversides & shrimp is what I used to feed them a long time ago.
I noticed they would shrivel up to get rid of the waste. Instead of feeding them twice a week, I cut back to once a week.

I saw positive results so I then cut back to once every 2 weeks. I then cut back to once a month. They seemed healthier & more colorfull. Then I think I went 2 months, they all looked fine.

Then I had bought the reef roids for the corals & found that they eat this stuff & have been using it since.

Stuff lasts a long time. And I don't have to feel strange asking the guy behind the counter for 3 shrimp.
NO, not 3 lbs. 3 shrimp please.

hahaha

OOh I do have 2 tomato clowns that host the biggest (original) anemone.

My camera was broke. I bought a new sim card, see if that works. If it does I will take some before & after photos so you guys can see the stuff in action.

wow dude

i feel sorry for your anemones

seriously, any expert will tell you they need meaty foods. i mean, look it up on google or anything, read a book.

they may be doing fine now but i doubt theyll survive...
