bubble algae

Yep, emerald crabs
Too bad you aren't in CA :( I got sucked into buying 3 of them for my 20 gallon (!!!) haha. I could definitely spare one :P

I have 2.5 in my 50 gal. They are doing a great job with the hair algae also.

The .5 crab is one that when I got it home did not have and legs or claw on its right side. I called to tell my LFS and they told me it would not live and come pick up another one. Well it been in the tank for 3 months now and getting around and eatting just fine.

+1
I want to see a pic/video of this!

I'm living through the bubble algae thing also (scattered). I bought 6 emeralds, and did see one of them eating the new growth. I have not witnessed them going after the older stuff. I'm in the process of picking off the old stuff under suction. I'll let you know if it works!!!!!!

thats what I do start a siphon on some 1/2 inch tube hold it over the bubble algae and then pry it off with a plastic butter knife.

So another myth I was told by a LFS guy...Well maybe its not a myth??? He says although emeralds to eat bubble algae they don't eat it in a way that keeps it from spreading. They have seemed to pull their load in my tank.

There's a pretty big debate as to whether popping bubble algae (valonia sp.) will cause it to spread. I don't think it does. I hate bubble algae. I call it reef herpes.

I pulled all the bigger bubbles off by hand. Once I had the big ones I have never seen any other in my tank.

BTW here is stumppy.

That's what I do as well. Works great for me.

What critter will eat bubble algae. I thought I read that emerald crabs do but I can't remember.

Some...Some Emerald crabs do eat bubble algae. However If the emerald crab is getting enough food off of the rocks & everything else....Its NOT going to eat the Bubble algae...

IMO...Use a Turkey Baster & a probe......Use the probe to gently pick the bubble off of the area....Keep the Turkey baster right at the point of removal....Then Suck up the bubble & get it out of the tank...Thats always been the best way for me.

I agree. The first one I had did a great job clearing out the algae. The second one I had I took back to the lfs because it started picking at my hammer coral and ended up popping a head off.

i know! i want one!!! :D

LOL I would try for a 6 legged one! Poor little guy has not colored up as well as the other 2 did. They are both now a darker green. He is still kind of gray, but not as bad as when I got him.
