Bubble Coral Update

Sooooo things are looking better with the coral with the water situation being taken care of. My calcium SKYROCKETED thanks to some terrible advice from a 'friend' just trying to push more of a sale:(. Anyhow with the help of my new favorite fish store and owners bluereefmarine has helped me start to fix everything and get back on track. The bubble got its first taste of half of a silverside sucked it down and blew up a lot larger looking for more I assume. Anyways the interesting turn that it has taken is that it has happily welcomed our maroon clown who was in much need of a home :).
OH and god help us, the ones with insomnia . . . lol

just one thing about what you are feeding. instead of silverslides have you thought about going to publix and buying large fresh shrimp and scallops and the freeze them individually to make dethawing easier? the silverslides are ok but the are very oily and nasty. you can have nitrate issues down the road. second thing is that you can feed all the other things in you tank with it too. i know several high end guys that feeds only fresh food. and it cost the same if not alittle cheaper in the long run

I make my own fish food and it's actually quite a bit cheaper and better than the stuff you get at the LFS. The cubes and that average over $20 per pound and are full of phosphates and other garbage.

make sure that the seafood you buy is raw. Publix has their own brand name seafood, which is what I use. Make sure you try and get items that have a high protein ratio. Do not get mussels, clams, etc as they are more poo than anything else.

just wondering, how is your "friends" fault, that your calcium skyrocked? it's up to you to research what/how much to add.

Did you get some test kits? That is a great investment so you know what and how much to dose your tank. Each coral addition changes the amount of chemicals you need to add to the tank.

Just went and got kits yes, oh and as for my friend it is my fault partly but I listened to the advice of someone who owns a lfs and have found out that the A and B I was dosing is too strong for my little tank and that coral vibrance the food I was told to use is full of calcium as well. I figured I could trust the advice so I went along with it. Now I have got a better base knowledge though. The coral still has yet to look as good as it was in the store but once the water is more in check im sure that will help.

that's interesting about the coral vibrance, never knew it was high in calcium....it does kinda smell like boan meal, so i guess that makes since.

with a new tank, i'd think you'd be ok with not dosing for a little while. i'd figure there's not much in there using up ca/alk, except maybe some snails and coralline algae? at least, not faster than you can replenish ca/alk with a regular water change.

bubble, mushrooms, cleaner shrimp, electric blue crabs, blue leg crabs, and 2 large mexican turbos. The bubble is kinda looking like crap lately under the lights even though last night it was excellent. With the addition of a fixture thats 2x24 T5 HO and the 150 watt hqi daylight is halfway up in the tank just too high for it now do you think? I would prefer not to move it around too terribly much.
