Bubble Frenzy

Hmm just hooked up a H.O.T magnum cannister and its shooting out crazy amounts of small bubles. The water level is above the exit tube. Any suggestions on stopping the bubbles? Thanks

Those things are a pain in the butt. I got one for occasional filtration and carbon too. Big waste of money.

You have to be really careful to pre-fill the canister to the point of overflowing before putting on the lid. They are supposed to be able to purge themselves of air, but they don't seem to do a good job, and they shoot bubbles forever.

Also, make sure the inlet/outlet fittings are tight. They are on the loose side and the water flow through them sucks air. I ended up using RTV on mine.

Also, make sure that the rubber o ring is seating correctly. Yes, they are a pain. I eventually siliconed mine shut and used it as a powerhead!

:D

I love mine. Got it from Jim actually, but I removed the silicone. No bubble problems at all, and it works great for spot running carbon. Much better than a regular magnum because it hangs on the tank.

There is a rigid airline like tube that goes from the impeller well to the top of the unit to suck out air. Make sure that it isn't blocked.

Other than that, seems to me like an o ring isn't seated properly which is usually the problem with magnums that run bubbles.

The Only filtration I have ever used on my tank is a skimmer, and a refugium. there is no real need for other filters.

There is if you are using them to filter detritus when you 'storm' the tank, or if you are going to actively run carbon after Interceptor or FWE treatments. A handy canister filter is great for all kinds of problems.
