Budget Greenhouse Project

Sam, can't wait to see your greenhouse. I bet you have Acroporas over 4 feet wide with crazy coloration on them?

Anybody can quote books all day long. It really takes people like hamburgular, treeman and (I believe) redox to jump in feet first and tackle problems as they come at them. If you live your life by a book it is going to be a pretty boring life. My hat's off to you guys. You are all truly pioneers of greenhouse aquaculture.

RedSonja, I will be at MASC on the 12th. I will probably be dragging a grey cooler around full of corals :) We should try to meet up. My name is Chris.

Redox, and anyone else in NC, you should consider attending this event. It was a lot of fun last year.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. It is true that I just started this greenhouse as an experiment. I read Anthony’s book several years ago and got the bug like a lot of you did. I read everything on the Internet I could find like Scubadude’s and Treeman’s threads. When I got myself in the position to actually do something I figured I still didn’t know squat and I should start off very small. So why not share the experience with everyone else?

So here we are a year later…

I find myself still growing fantastic looking corals indoors, but not so much outdoors. I look back at the electrical cost in the summertime….and the wintertime (ugh)! That is a nightmare! At this point it is quite obvious to me that I am better off indoors with a small system.

Now what if I want to have a larger system? I think there is a lot of good advice out there and on this thread. Certainly the #1 priority would be to reduce my electrical costs. This was money wasted mostly on heating and cooling. A bunch of you have chimed in with ideas about this. Passive greenhouse design, geothermal heating/cooling supplementation, solar heating just to name a few. You never know….in an area like mine with 80% + humidity, the most efficient design may be a mixture of air conditioning with geothermal. Redox is in up to his neck examining the finer points of heating/cooling in our shared coastal NC climate. He had a fantastic operation setup which enables him to make adjustments and gauge results with minimal effort or redesign. I will admit that a lot of my decisions on the next system will be molded by his personal results…..as long as he doesn’t catch me peaking over his shoulder. :)

The next hurdle I would tackle would be the lighting/spectrum issues. There is a wealth of information near the middle of this thread. I will be going over that stuff again and again I am sure. I would not mind acquiring samples of some film, glass, and polycarbonate materials to actually test with.

After all of that, I think a lot of inefficiencies can by lessened with pure volume. This little 8x6 foot greenhouse is destined for growing veggies the rest of its life.

I will continue to post and read here on Reef Central. I encourage those of you with propagation related plans and ideas to share this knowledge. This is a hobby for most of us, and the advancement and enjoyment of the hobby should be the #1 priority. We should also keep in mind that we are dealing with a limited resource that may one day rely on the combined knowledge of an industry to protect it from extinction.

If there was one important lesson I did pick up from the “Bible” that Samtheman so purposely advocates, it is this………There was more money in writing that book, than running that greenhouse. So, you better have a good time doing it.

Ham,

Thanx for hosting such a huge information exchange. It has been great being along for the ride. If you do decide to scale up again let me know, I am sure I could find my way down there to give a hand.

Is MASC going to be at NC State this year? I think I am out of town that weekend for work but I will try to move things around.

It is at the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State on the 12th of August. They have some information at http://masotc.net/

I think they had about 70 people ther last year. A little informal, but worth my 2-hour drive each way.

I've been to both MASC meetings now and it's definitely worth attending. If nothing else the raffle prizes and frags from the demonstrations are worth the registration fee, plus you can listen in on some great speakers throughout the day.

Go register! ;)

Love to meet up with you, and any other RC'ers attending. I'll be helping out with the food preparation demonstration so if you don't find me before that, look for me there. Easiest way to identify me is look for the gal with hip-length red hair. :)

If you have any white pom xenia to trade I'd like to get a piece, or any xenia at all for that matter as I think our tank's alkalinity etc., should be able to keep it happy now.

Hey Ham,

What a thread.

great to be at work to get paid for gaing all this fantastic information.

Please post once Stage 2 comes alive.

I was to purchase a GH today but after this research - I need to look into the plastic more.
Also got to order this book of Anthony Calfo. Hard to find in Ireland - Have to get it from the UK - As everything for this hobby - soon to change if I get up and running.

Holy ancient thread resurrection Batman! :)

There is indeed a lot of good info here, glad you found it and it'll be interesting to see where it heads now that's it been bumped up. :D

wow! been a long time since I've seen this thread pop up on my list.

Anybody know if ham's got another one going?

I know :D But I'm sure he'll come along and answer soon.

Hello all!

As Sonja already knows, I’m just sitting back right now. I’ve got a few tanks in the house holding some stock that I could grow in the future.

When I took the tank apart I observed a lot of water between the pool and the spinning disc. This was going to be a major problem in the future. Bottom line is that I should not have tried to drill a hole in the bottom of that pool. It is just too textured and very hard to seal. Also, as stated before, I would continue to spend a great deal of money on heating that greenhouse in the winter. It was small enough to have fun and learn some stuff, but not large enough to operate at a profit….or even break-even.

My current plans are to provide assistance with some other greenhouse projects in my local area. There are a couple people on this thread that live within a reasonable driving distance. They have some pretty big plans, and I cannot wait to see them spring to life.

It is entirely possible that I will do another propagation project on my own. I am currently thinking about doing a 12x12 or 12x16 northern greenhouse (insulated building with glass on the south). Right now I’m thinking that I can install 6-8 250 gallon tanks in a building like that. I still have not ruled out a medium sized above ground swimming pool if I can find one without a metal frame.

BallaBooyeaH, put lots of thought into obtaining high water volume, and good insulation. There are also a couple of threads floating around here with people talking about different film types. This is probably worth looking into.

It's time for someone (hint hint) else to start a thread about a greenhouse and break the 20521 views that this one has :)

I welcome everyone to post if they have something going on.

Thanks hamburglar I ahve really enjoyed reading this thread. You are truly a pioneer, thanks for sharing the ups and downs for all to see. I live in a one bedroom flat with no garden but I can dream of greenhouses and coral propating all day long and love the threads here on RC soo much to learn Thanks again and all the best for future projects that I like many others will be following. rick

A new greenhouse thread?

A new greenhouse thread?

Hi Hamburglar,
I'm not new at saltwater (started in 1972, but just re-started into discus FW in 2001, and reefs in 2003, I think after long hiatus). My real problem is how to use these "threads" at all to communicate my project. For instance, all my greenhouse reef pics are 7MB, and I don't know how to reduce their density and upload them to RC.
I reviewed most of your project and it was fascinating (and great). I wish I had done so a long time ago. I started my greenhouse reef at a non-profit (I work for it and they allowed me to use their space) in mid-2005, and in the past few days I reviewed your work. Practically everything you said, particularly about temperature control, was like looking at all my own problems.
I was also amazed at how fast you moved in getting the thing together; it took me months to get anything at all accomplished.
Anyway, if I start a thread called "Budget Greenhouse Project 2: Every mistake that can be made, and then some.", maybe you'll take a look.
John

Gee I wonder who you guys are talking about :strange:.

20k views... wow good work.

I have been furiously going back through my notes trying to find any loose ends I may not have tied up before I jump into the next phase of my adventure. I am trying to find a good fiberglass guy that is semi local to build the tanks (no luck so far), and trying to track down where the bagged calcium sand is coming from(slightly more luck but still a ways to go). I have also been talking with a bunch of you on your own plans. It seems like 07-08 will be the years of the coral farmer, and I can't even tell you how cool that will be.

the best way I can think to get files that big is to put them up on a site like flickr or twango. Once you do that they will size them up for you into different resolutions, and usually provide you with a url for each. Then all you have to do is embed the urls in your post and you should be set.
If you start that thread not only will I be interested, but I could probably be a regular contributor.

Not to steal my own thunder but look for a new post tomorrow or Saturday in the business plan thread, followed later in the week by a whole new thread ;);)

Yay!

I'm still stuck on thinking up what to name my business, it shouldn't be so difficult. *head-desk*

-Sonja

I've spent months thinking of business names before. The good part is after you spend so much time the right name just pops in your head and you know it right away. Unfortunately for me this one didn't happen that way and I chose my name to try to preemptively push the agriculture issue with the county. Ah well I can always change it later when things get going:\
