Build a New Glass Tank

For all you guys with large systems just wanted some input on diminsions.

i have exactly 8' x 4 feet and no real limitation on height for space. the size im leaning towards is 8' x 3' x 29''. i know the shorter the height the easier it will be to mantain. if you had to build your tank again with my specs what would u do? now, i will not have any rear or side access either.

I have a friend with similar dimensions but his is 10x3x29 and he is always saying he wishes he went 10x4x29. So if I were you I would go with 4 feet deep if you can.

also i saw a option to have the overflows on the outside of the tank instead of inside. they looked like hangons.

I would never go with a tank deeper than 30" lighting is more expensive, and reaching the bottom is alot more difficult to reach than you think when it's filled with water.

29'' is the tallest i wanted to go, due to cost mostly, i will be place 4 400W over this tank, 4 feet deep sounds sweet not sure how well the 400's would cover it.

im planning a tank of similar dimensions. my tank will be 36 deep. my current tank is 30 inches deep and it is difficult to work on things deep in the tank but it is more than worth it when you consider how nice the added depth makes the tank look. i never understand why people say you need higher wattage to run a deeper tank. it is true that you would need higher wattage to keep the same corals deeper in a tank but most people dont do that. if you dont mind working with tools to keep the tank clean at the bottom deeper is the way to go.

i have about 4 enductors i wanted to put in the tank, i think they require some depth.

I had 4 lumenarc 4x400 20k radiums on my 120x36x30 tank and it was fine. That being said if you really want to grow sps go down to 250/w 10k xm's and actinics. remember your tank can be 48" deep but if all your high light sps are on the top 24" they dont know whats going on below. I was never a guy to put sps on the sandbed. I put my lps down low and my sps high and it all worked great.

man your tank is looking great, r u up to helping me move another tank :D. depth is only 29'' i was worried about width, that would be 48'' is see you are at 36'',
Im going to go with the sunlight supply, i like that the reflectors just clip off, and htey have the clips for t5 if i wanted to add them later

I currently have 4 400 W hqi's really didnt want to buy more lights,

yes any time ill be more then happy to help you move. Im looking into 170x60x48 2000/g + atm so its all good.
I had great growth and didnt need actinics by going the radium route. BTW that tank has been down for close to two years so the itch is getting to me.
Most of the better lights cover 3x3 area start off with the 4 - 400 and you can always add some t5 to cover the edges if you feel you need them later.

That's what I was thinking with the t5's, I think I will just do 36'', with no rear access, seems Like the thing to do, builder offered a external over flow option, may just go that route

thats what i had on one side(external) I believe jeff from CRF's tank was 120x48x36 back to a wall, but i think he's is going bigger to 42 or 48 tall.
