Building a huge reef tank???

I was interested in building a massive reef tank in my house one that I would actually be able to swim in. I was wondering if there is anyone in here that has built a very large tank themselves and if there are any posts on it.

Have you checked out the "Large Reef Tank" section yet?

Nope not yet. I remember coming across a few different posts on here where someone built a huge tank by themselves and showed each step would you happen to know how I could find that?

Go to the Large Tank Forum. You'll find some immense tanks there. One that comes to mind is 1700g, but he doesn't swim in it.

Would you swim in it during the leak test? I know I would have to look for leaks on the inside aswell as the outside in a 1700g. =] I would make sure to get a video camera and a few friends to help look for leaks. Go big or go home right!!!

There used to be a guy in Michigan, I believe calling himself Mr. 5000 that had a huge tank (5000 gallons) in his basement. On his website, which is no longer up was a pic of him with snorkel on cleaning algea in the tank. He built it with concrete back and sides and had a 1 or 2 inch thick viewing panel in front. He had like two, 200 gallon sumps and numerous 400 watt (maybe 1000 watt? I forget) MH lighting it up. The problem he ran into was an insane amount of evaporation, like over 100 gallons a day and it was rotting out the floorboards of his house above the tank. On the plus side, he never got hassled from the Tang Police!

yes it was mr 4000 you can do a search for it on here or you can go to thereeftankdotcom and look under large tanks there is a 17k tank there.

With a large tank it will be necessary to get in for some maintenence, and coral placement, but I would really limit it to just that. The primary reason being that it is a pain in the butt, It can really effect your skimmer for a couple of days afterwards too. If you do design a big tank, plan for water displacement if you know your going to be getting in.

I thought it was MR. 4500 or maybe it was 4000, anyway I think I remember his house was destroyed by the humidity
