hello everyone, i am a familiar with reef tanks but by no means would i call myself an expert. the current tank i am using is a standard 55 gallon tank (4' wide 2' tall and 1 foot wide roughly). i have the tank on a second story and cannot risk going any bigger. i recently had had an idea come to mind. i can construct my own tank at about 6 foot in length and maybe a foot or foot and a half tall to spread the weight out from being in one spot. and also that would give my fish more swimming room. let me know what you guys think abbout my idea.

You Have not given much information, to give much of an opinion on..What do you want to build it out of? wood. acrylic. glass? It would be my guess that you will get a lot of answers to the affect of you might better do more research, the more the better, If your going to build it then you want to get it right the first time..It certainly has been done by many and from different types of material..

Are you going to put the tank on the second floor??

Yes I am. I want to make it out of acrylic but if it is too expensive I will make it out of glass.

Acrylic will be cheaper. Once you get into thicker glass that isn't a standard size it becomes pretty expensive and very heavy. It seems like you are concerned with weight so I would go acrylic then

I am wanting to go larger but i dont want to push my second floor to the max weight it can hold, thats why i am wanting to build one custom. unless someone can point me in the right direction

I don't think Building one Verses buying one is going to make any distance in how much it's going to end up weighting..if you go bigger your going to push the limits either way

Are you thinking of keeping about the same water volume just spread out over a larger footprint? I would still worry about the overall weight, but in theory it would spread the load out, or you could do the same thing with just a bigger stand.
