bulkhead overflow rates?

I just picked up a couple 45 gallon tanks that have 3/4" ID bulkheads in them for next to nothing. My question is how many gph can they return to my sump?
Also what size pipe should I use to connect to them and PVC or CPVC?

Thanks in advance!

I would go with 1 inch PVC myself with a 3/4 inch adapter. You should be able to get about 400gph I would think.

would that be 400gph per tank, or combined? I am thinking combined, but I have never had a overflow and sump system before, so please excuse my noobness:cool:

3.4 inch is around 300 GPH. For a 29 Gal that would be plenty. 10 cycles and hour.

What you mean per tank? Pipe size should remanin 3/4 inch. Your bulhead fitting will be bigger then 3/4. Best bet would go to HD and pick up a bulkhead that fits 3/4 pipe. measure OD on it you will know size hole required. Run 3/4 pipe though out including return. Get a pump that rates a little higher and install a ball valve to regulate GPH on return. Easiest way to do.

I have 2 45 gallon tanks (see first post) I plan on using one refugium/sump. Do not plan on having corals, just FOWLR.

I have the bulkheads already, came installed with the tanks and I believe that they are for 1" pipe since the piece of 3/4" I found in my basement is about 1/4" too small for the bulkhead. I am guessing on getting a pump that will put out about 1000gph at 3 feet of head and "T"ing for the returns to each tank and of course cutting it back with ball valves to equal everything out.

Sounds about correct, right?
