Bulkhead thru bottom or out the back?

Hello, I just read your articles on sump & it has increased my knowledge & understanding, thank you!

I have a 29 gal tank with built in sump or wet/dry area in the back. I am adding an external sump and need to drill for an overflow & don't want to screw it up!

One thought is to just drill for the bulkhead out the back of the first chamber (the built-in overflow that came with the tank) near the top of the chamber. This should keep the water level in the first chamber at the level I drill, thus keeping that overflow in the tank quiet. I am not sure what it will sound like flowing down the hose into the sump though.

Another thought is to put a Durso stand pipe in, but I was wondering if it works just as well if the bulkhead goes out the back of the tank (at the bottom of the first chamber, thru an elbow) as it would going thru the bottom of the tank.

Any other ideas? I plan to do some experimenting in the garage with some buckets.

Thanks,
Steve
