Canister+ bulkhead?

Good evening, friends. Has anyone put an overflow box with teeth inside their fish tank, with a hole and a bulkhead in the tank, and connected that system to a canister? Would it work?

I use a Fluval FX4 with an overflow box inside a 75 gallon. I did not drill the tank. The cannister simply siphons from the box. The teeth on the box simply have to pass more water than the cannister draws so it doesn't suck in air.
It would work the same if I had a rear box and connected the cannister to that.
The box I made has a down tube with a strainer so it surface skims and also sucks up dirt near the bottom.
