Bulkhead too big?

Is it possible to have bulkheads that are TOO big? Im setting up a 93 gallon cube tank.

I'm asking because, I'm thinking of ordering an 1800GPH and it comes with 2 - 2" bulk heads, is this TOO big? Will a bulkhead too big cause any issues? I can have them alter it to 1.5" but im just making sure I can get the appropriate flow through the tank..

;you shouldnt have any problem, so long as your return pump is strong enough.

if not you will have siphone flow issues.

i drilled my 40G with one inch bulkheads and went to 1 1/2 downpipe.

no issues and i have a smaller pump thank I should!

if you feel it is too big you can reduce it down to 1/2 down pipe with a reducer.

but it all depends on your return pump flow after head loss

edit:

i meant to say reduce it BY 1/2" to the downpipe!

Im thinking of going with the Jebao DCT-12000 with about a 40" head on it..

If you are aiming for that much flow, you would do well to consider a Bean Animal Drain combined with a coast-to-coast overflow.

This will be close to that actually its a Ghost Overflow much like the Reef Savvy but someone is making copies on ebay with 2 drains from the tank into an external box with 2 siphons and a stand pipe for emergencies .. comes with a bean animal in the back and a small box in the tank with a weir

i would leave it at 2" with that pump flow and a bean animal.

If i max this out (which i doubt i will, lets be honest) but is that TOO much flow for the tank? Im thinking I would like a mixed reef but mainly SPS/Zoa tank with very few LPS

never too much flow =P

just don't aim the return AT the corals =P

you can split the return with loc line if you want for flow flexibility.

what i did was put a 2.5 " flare on the return and i keep right at the water level, this pushes the surface of the water towards the overflow and creates a lot of turbulent water for air exchange

The "ghost" overflow is just a marketing ploy. Its simply an internal/external overflow and has nothing to do with the drains. With three drain lines, its a BeanAnimal and should be set up accordingly. Having two siphon lines makes no sense.

Too many folks today rename something and try to sell it as new. Most of the time it is just a poor imitation of the original without the understanding to do it properly.

Sorry, yes I understand that its just a name and marketing.. and I honestly have a loose understanding of the Bean animal system.. The one I want is a small box inside the tank with a larger box outside the tank that has 3 bulkheads out of it.. my understanding is I set it up with 2 U tubes and 1 stand pipe "emergency" and one of the U's are always a siphon and the other one is a backup siphon and the 3rd is a "oh crap" drain..

not really

one is a siphone 24/7

the secondary is a slow flow drain. almost a drip.

the 3rd is the emergencey oh crap

the oh crap has save my day MANY a times when i playing with ball valve flow control on the main drain and i started over flowing.

with the bean animal it takes about a minute for it to level out after a power off on the return pump.

ugh i suck at this :-P I honestly have read the thread but wasnt going to do much else with the knowledge till I had to set it up and get it going.. I plan on also running soft tubing after the valve so i have the flexibility to move things around if needed
