Buying used lenses

Okay so I bought a new canon rebel t3 and now I'm looking at buying a new lens. And since macro lenses are so expensive I was considering buying one used. Anyone have any advice on where to buy used lenses and what to look for when buying used camera equipment in general?

I've never owned or used it myself, but I've heard and seen nothing but good about it.

stay away from the tamaron or knock offs. stick with the canon lenses! They usually skimp on stuff, like build quality, lenses, lens sizes etc....

The Tamron 90mm 2.8 is a very highly regarded macro lens on all the forums I'm on. This includes both POTN, a Canon forum and Nikon Cafe, Nikon's largest. I'm not saying it's as good as Canon's, but I wouldn't say it's skimping either.

I have to disagree there. The Tamron 90mm macro is a very nice lens as is the Sigma 150mm macro which I own. It's as sharp if not sharper than the Nikon 180mm macro.

I also have the Nikon 60mm macro which is nice to.

Thanks for everyones input, sorry 110galreef, 2 to 1 , they win ... j/k im still debating between dishing out the dough for a canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens, or going with that used Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro Autofocus Lens . Dont know how much difference 10 mm makes but the canon is new but for 170$ more.
Any thoughts?

Some key points i found to keep in the for front....

Image stabilization, much better build quality, resale will be much better, blazing fast auto focus, better optical design, bigger UV filter (more light)

Does seem like a good lens...just have to weigh what is most important to you....

I read most of these articles and it really seem to be a toss up between the best lens as they all do great for most all of us.

Oh & FYI.....I am leaning towards just going 18-200mm lens and doing my macro's with that lens as well. I don't want to be swapping lenses and getting dust inside! One lens and done. I don't seem much difference to fromm 200mm-300mm and for me I don't think I really will need the 300mm.

Now I will probably be picking up a nikon, but canon's 18-200mm lens seems very similiar to the Nikon.

Just a thought. I still havent decided on my exact camera yet. But whichever I get I am getting the 18-200mm lens!

I've bought 20+ used lenses from KEH.com and I've always been very happy. Their ratings are also conservative.

Here's a review on that Tamron lens (haven't read it myself). You can also find reviews on just about every other lens from Tamron, Canon, Nikon, Sigma and a few others on that site. They're all very thorough.

For the higher end lenses, I very often buy used. You don't save a ton of money, but most photographers with those lenses take good care of them, and they'll still last you for many, many more years if you do the same. I've bought from B&H and Adorama, and in my experience, if they say the lens is in excellent condition, it is. You can save more money if you buy from individuals on online forums or Ebay, but you're taking more of a gamble there, so I've yet to do it.

Agreed, KEH is great and very conservative with their ratings. I purchased an 80-200 "BGN" from them that I would've rated an EX.

I have bought most of my lenses new and used from Roberts Distributors. I have a Nikon D300 and shoot mostly Sigma f2.8 os lenses. They have been very good for me. No quality issues. The one Nikon lens I have is the 70-200mm f2.8. I bought it used at Roberts. It was like new.
