byssal gland problem

I just ordered a few maximas off of an online company and it looks like they just ripped them off the rock, or whatever they were attached to. All but one looks ok, but the one has what looks like the gland pulled out of the shell. It is about a 2" clam, and does open, but appears to be somewhat gaping. It looks like a white worm and about the thickness of an earthworm with white hairy projections off the end. It is extended about 3/4" out. Is this indeed the byssal gland, can they retract it on thier own, or is the clam basically dead and there is nothing I can do. Any help is appreciated

Most livestock suppliers keep they're clams either in sand or on small pvc stands to prevent them from attaching to anything while they are waiting to be sold, so I doubt that they've been ripped off of rocks. The earthworm thing you describe sounds like the clams foot. It's probably trying to
attach itself.
What vendor did you get the clams from?
