byssus gland?

I have a new crocea and it hasnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t attached or even made an attempt to attach in over a week. If you are looking at the byssus gland opening, I see old threads and what appears to be a tube like structure that has filaments inside it.
Is this new threads or is it a damaged gland?
Can you see the gland or is this inside the clam under the opening membrane?
If it is a damaged gland how long can a clam live before you will see a decline in health?

What does a damaged byssus gland look like? What are you looking for?

Thanks in advance. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m kind of new to the clam end of the hobby, I have only just started keeping them , any help will be appreciated.

if the clam is happy in the spot that you placed it, it should start to attach soon. it could take a few days or a few weeks. i wouldnt worry about it as long as the clam is looking healthy, has good color and is open most of the time.how do you know its not attached? is it because your reaching in and lifting the clam to check? this can stop the clam from attaching, just leave it be.

Ok thanks, the clam is full and open when fish swim over it, it reacts quickly then opens full again, so I think itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s looking healthy. I just read that croceas are mostly collected in the wild and that can cause damage, also the place where I bought it has people who donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t care about the corals and other animals. They rough handle everything, so Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m a little concerned.

i would look for another place to spend your money

I know but the only three places left around here have the same problem, a bunch of kids running the fish rooms into the ground. I would rather spend more money in a good small store with knowledgeable people and an owner that is actually into the hobby. That place went out of business. :mad2: People like to save money, who cares about service!
