C. Solorensis and C. Flavidorsalis?

So I have recently fallen in love with the male red head solon wrasse. I was thinking about adding one in my tank as my "show piece" fish. My question is, will he get along with my yellow fin fairy wrasse? He's about 2.5-3 inches and is probably my most peaceful fish in the tank.

Here's my tank info:

75 gallon reef tank with:
2 ocellaris clowns
1 fire goby
1 starry blenny
1 mandarin
1 green chromis
1 yellow fin fairy wrasse
1 cleaner shrimp
turbo and nassarius snails
red/blue leg hermit crabs


If it could work out, how would you go about it?

I would not mix the solar wrasse with other fairy. The only wrasse my solar wrasse got along with was African leopard wrasse. He bullied other wrasses to death. Mccoskers flasher did not last 48 hrs. If I were you I would find a large African or potters (use caution) leopard wrasse instead. They tend to get along with most other wrasses.

I really like the leopard wrasses, but the fact that live aquaria has them listed as "expert only" would make me nervous!

Would my yellow fin fairy wrasse be compatible with most other non aggressive wrasses?

Don't worry about expert only designation. The trick is to find one that's eating. If you don't see it eat don't buy it. Otherwise they will perish in your tank.
For the most part your yellow fin should be ok. I wouldn't mix it with a red fin or long fin fairy wrasses though. They can be mean. Lol

This has not been my experiences with C. solorensis. I have often kept them with other wrasses and found them to be pretty mellow, although a fairy wrasse kept as the only wrasse in in the tank can get belligerent toward new closely related wrasses.

Actually yellowfins, C. flavidorsalis can be on the aggressive side for fairy wrasses, but using a social acclimation box can help.

Often it is not that simple. Even eating leopard wrasses frequently have internal parasites that need to be treated to prevent the leopard from slowly wasting away. They also many times damage their mouth trying to bury during shipping. They can be shy when first introduced, as well as taking awhile to get used to your light cycle. That being said, once acclimated are quite hardy.

If you use an acclimation box on the solorensis, you'd probably be fine.

Mine was big, easily 4.5 inches...largest fish in the tank. Could be the reason for his bullying. So if you decide to pull the trigger get one on a smaller side.

I've noticed that unlike other fish that get less pretty with increased size and age (maroon clowns and blue tangs) solar wrasses are actually more colorful and shiny when they get bigger.

What size tank did you keep yours in? Mine was 4ft 60 gallon which has the same or similar footprint as OP's tank. If it was in your 150 then it would to a certain degree explain why you experience was different.

I have kept them in many sizes, as big as 100g, as small as a 40 breeder, and many sizes in between, even on the smaller size such as a 54 corner and 60 cube.

2-3 days is usually plenty, but observation is key! Until there's no display of aggression.
