c02

CO2 Magic!

You must keep in mind that people here on RC only started dabbling with marine 'planted' tanks about.. max I'd say.. two years ago for the old salties. And only in the last six months or so have we had more than a handful of people experimenting with things. Its a very new area full of unknowns.

Thanks for the responses. After reading that thread, I think the addition of c02 would be good. If c02 helps stabilize pH and ALK, and rapidly makes plants grow, wont dont more people use it in their planted tanks?

Why dont more people use it? Because we have no idea if this causes any trouble with calcifying organisms in the tank, like corals, or other sensitive creatures. I havent seen any major negative aspects come from CO2 dosing yet, discounting the phyto bloom, but that doesnt mean none exist. I dont keep any corals in my seagrass tanks, so my forays with CO2 cant tell us anything in this area.

If you keep a true marine planted, no corals, and you find that your alkalinity levels fall and your pH is atrocious through the photoperiod definitely give it a whirl. I'm just not comfortable enough with my little test tanks to say that those with lagoons (some coral, some plants) should be dabbling with it just yet. If they want to try out of their own free will they certainly can. :)

Definitely. And keep us posted (we love photos!) on how it goes for you. I dont know if anyone else is currently dosing CO2.

Anyone?

Oh another question for you Samala. What is the difference between SW and FW that (for the most part) doesnt need the addition of c02? Is it the alk, calcium, or something else? I am asking because if I wanted to do a planted brackish tank with widgeon grass at a SG of around 1.010 would it need an additon of c02?

I started Co2 on the smaller system in june and the larger one about a week ago.

I started Co2 on #1 system, because do to an ice storm 1.5 yrs ago,it doesn't have very many inverts. For 4.5 days without electricity and a high of 22 degrees F for the week. You get the picture.:(
Anyhow...
Really, I'm amazed how the Co2 has helped.I have caulerpa growing in there that I haven't seen in 5-6 yrs.As for the turtle grass,it grows so slow it's hard to tell what effect it's had on it.
Co2 has helped well enough as to tip the balance in favor of the caulerpa. In other words, the caulerpa is growing like crazy and the hair alge is on the decline. :D :D

This is what I've notice since starting Co2.Fuge #1 was growing a green hair alge everywhere, the sand,on the caulerpa (only racemosa and what looks like a palm tree no ID),the glass and float at the surface.I would pull this %#@*&& stuff out by the hand fulls.
Now I'm harvesting alge instead. With very little HA growth. The macros seem to be out competing this stuff. They include the racemosa( the flat on top and a small round),palm tree, saw blade and a feather. Please excuse useing the common names. These have started growing even though I haven't added anything in years.

What do you think about me using a pressurized c02 for my future lagoon? Do you think it would be a bit overkill? It does shut off at night which is a bonus.

I think that would be the way to go for a better control of dosing Co2.I would like to get a controler, gages, valves etc....But it's not in the budget now.So I use the sugar/water/apple juice/yeast mix.Controlling the out put gets tricky, cause over a week or so time period, the Co2 pressure veries from high to low.

I think atleast one member here pipes the CO2 from his beer making container into the tank, thereby accomplishing two tasks at once. Beverages for watching seagrass grow, and co2 for helping provide the entertainment. :D

Now thats an idea! Some barley and hops. Does hops come preroasted?Because I don't think I can fly, roasting hops in the oven, by the wife without Her noticeing.:D
