Thanks! Still not sure which brand of reactor to get. What brand are you using?
i have a korallin 4002 for about 375g of adjusted tank volume. it is important to get a non-inflated as close to real system water volume as possible...though it still a 'guess'...
i like the korallin but it is trickier to use than the geo (later on that) that i have. i probably wouldnt recommend a korallin for those just starting ca reactors. kind of tough to 'dial in'.
in actuality, the 4002 is sufficient for my system. what? the 4002 is rated for up to a 1600g system!!! well, nope, i cant see this happening. i could see it on a 400...'maybe' 500g mod to heavy stocked fast growing stony coral tank.
that is why it is important to get real world experience from people who have used the equipment. but, i dont want to preach to the choir.
i have a geo 612 on my 90g clam tank. the geo is much much easier to use and dial in than the korallin. much much much easier. i think that you will find that most geo users will say the same thing. the only thing i dont like about most ca reactors is the thumb screws to hold the top lid down. this is where euroreef and aqua c reactors win. check those out too by all means!
there is no real advantage to having a complicated ca reactor. all it is suppose to do is acidify the chamber via co2 and dissolve the media to make equal parts of alk and ca.
the easiest (and surprisingly cheapest) way to adjust effluent drip rate is with small irrigation valve you find at home depot (two for $1.60).
sizing a ca reactor is very important...esp if you get a ca reactor that is too small for your system.
a lot of people will say that they have a 300g system that consists of a 200g tank with a 100g sump. well, if the display tank has the average live rock amount...the rock takes up about 20%...so, display tank is already down to 160g (approx). that 100g sump? well, if the reefer is sane, then the sump is at most 50% filled. this gives you 50g.
so...simple, simple math gives you 210g of adjusted tank volume which is a heck of a lot more representative than 300g. but 300g does sure sound nicer to say i must say!
again, i dont want to sound like i am preaching to the choir.
again, i wouldnt recommend a korallin for the get go but a geo is a good option. plus, they are reasonably priced with all the benefits of easy use! you 'could' get away with a 612 but most likely you would fare best with a 624 that will allow room for growth!
