I have been looking at this here for a while now and I am planning on doing this to my 125. So far all the threads that I have seen have been about using glass. Can acrylic be used? If so how thick does it have to be?

I would think you could use acrylic but I am not sure how you would attach the overflow to the inside of your aquarium since silicon will bond to the glass but not acrylic. For the the thickness I would use 1/4" .I have mine made in glass that is only 1/8" with a center brace in the middle for strenght....I have a few pictures of it in my gallery...I hope this helps. you SHOULD be fine to use acrylic...

but I wouldnt if you can avoid it.

silicone sticks fairly well to acrylic, it wouldnt hold a tank together, but it will still bond to it with a good deal of strength.

but though this is a place where there is very little stress on it; so it would probably hold up fine. it is also a place where failure has major consequences, namely, flooding your house. so the outside chance of a leak it not really worth the risk IMO.

you dont need any crazy strong glass, you could probably get away with the window glass from ace hardware, but on a 6' span, be sure to give it some bracing in the middle.

But what about the flexing of the tank? As time progresses Acrilyc Flexes, using glass as an overflow would not flex, with it but acrylic would, GOOD OR BAD. also YOU CAN glue acrylic together, with #16 acrylic glue
