Calibration Solutions

Who wants 'em? What concentration and what chemical/nutrient/molecules do you want in there?

I would like a good salinity solution, 35ppt, sealed in a small container to maintain calibration w/o possiblity of evaporation. Thanks!

So you want NaCl at 35 ppt? Crap...now I've got to figure out how to convert ppt to some kind of gram weight. Dang. You always have to be challenging, Dave! hah hah.

Actually Dave...it's no problem at all. I'll bring it along.

Any idea what volume you want?

I can be a bit of a PITA sometimes, can't I :) I could probably do it if I looked up the density of NaCl and did the calculation, but I can't remember if ppt is ppt by volume or ppt by weight. If it helps any, it is 1.0259 S.G. or 53 milliSeimens conductivity (if you have instruments in your lab to measure those). Thanks!

Dave

I don't think we have instruments for that...or at least none that I am used to using.

I was going to get some MiliQ water, then just add salt to 35ppt. I have a friend I can ask about the conversion, if I can't figure it out in the next couple of days...so no worries. I'll get it done...or should I say git 'r dun...I know how redneck you are, Dave.

I would like some please!!! :wavehand:

Some of what, dipsh!t?

Calibration sol'n... Whatever you make up is fine... 1.023-1.028 would be ideal... Just LMK what you're giving me...

You're cranky around the holidays... ;) I need to talk to Nathan...

The one everyone hates to celibrate... :) Its kind of funny that the acronym for Valentine's Day is VD... :D

Mel,
I would like some calibration fluid to calibrate my refractometer. What ever you mix up will work as long as I know the SG.

this is all completely greek to me, but i've got a used refractometer being shipped out to me tomorrow. do i need fluid??

I don't know the answer to that for sure, but I would say calibrating it wouldn't hurt anything, so why not? Ya know?

digidana:
Those $30-50 refractometers are notorious for 1) not being calibrated when received and 2) can't be accurately calibrated with RO/DI water. There was a thread on here about a year ago where people would calibrate it to 0 ppt w/ RO/DI water and they were still off by up to 0.005 S.G. when they measured salt solutions. That is why it is best to calibrate with a known salinity solution, and the closer to the salinity you maintain your tank at, the better.

Ok guys...bad news. I'm sick...and I've been sick for 3 days. I haven't made the solutions up and I'm not going to work (haven't been since Tuesday). So I can't get them made up by tomorrow.

I'm really sorry.

Best I can do is to make them up next week and possibly leave them at the CR for people to pick up or I can meet people places to drop them off. I'm really sorry...I got the bug.
