Came back from vacation to this

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site but not so new to the hobby. I just want to apologize now for the long post coming. I've had previous saltwater tanks with success in the past but had to shut my last one down due to me having to move homes and took a break from the hobby. On September 30th I setup a 5g tall fowlr with a fish cycle (I was very careful as not to harm the fish). It's a tank bred percula clown, around 1.5 inches. On December 10th I went to the Dominican for a week vacation (my first ever), and left my fish feeding to my dad with very specific instructions as to not over feed. I tested all levels and everything came back all within the normal levels. Unfortunately when I got home on the 17th, as I walked into my room to look at my tank I was horrified to say the least that there was a ton of food sitting on the bottom of the tank and algae galore. I immediately tested the water and there was a higher than normal presence of ammonia. Fish seemed ok so I continued to keep an eye on him. The day before yesterday I noticed he was having a hard time breathing so I increased the flow on the ph and pointed it upwards to get surface agitation which did help, he seems to be okay now as far as breathing goes. I retested the water, my nitrate is 20 ppm but I can't test for nitrite or ammonia because my tests ran out. My water is no longer cloudy. But my problem is even tho the fish seems ok and looks ok he refuses to eat and only swims in the top right back corner of the tank ( I know perculas can host a certain area of the tank). Anyone have any ideas as to why he won't eat? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've had clowns for over a year, there were times they wouldn't eat, but that's because I was still learning and my nitrates were a little high...hopefully your tank doesn't have any presence of ammonia, good luck

Add prime immediately.

And start doing water changes, siphoning out as much uneaten food as possible.

I would not worry to much about your fish missing a couple of meals after how much it pigged out on while you were on vacation. clownfish are known for having good appetites, but getting those water parameters in line is the priority.

Thanks guys. I'll get on that water change immediately, the prime I don't have yet though.

Also 5g for a clownfish is far too small. Go to petco during their $1 per gallon sale and buy at least a 20L tank. It will be much easier to keep things stable as well.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I don't have the space right now for a 20L but I may know someone who would be willing to swap mine for something more appropriate.

Anything less than a 20 won't be able to house a clown for long. If you are stuck with the 5 gallon, get a clown goby which is one of your only options. Maybe a fire fish.

Okay thanks I'll see if the guy I know has one of either or if not I'll just sell it to him if he has the space for it. He has a 50g he's been running for some time now, clown might be happier there. Or I'll swap for a shrimp or something once my tank is stable again.
