Camera with nice macro

The tank size does not make a difference to the lens you should get. Important is to ensure the macro lens can do 1:1 magnification - then it is considered a true macro lens and you can get really close. A 100mm lens will most likely focus further at 1:1 than a 60mm, though this depends on lens construction. For the aquarium I'd say 100mm is great - allows you to get nice shots of critters deeper in the tank, though I think price/availability is the bigger factor here.

Not sure what you're saying here? The lens size will make a difference. 100 mm well definately focus further than a 60mm and like I said; put more space between the subject and camera, from the lens I've used at least. I think 60mm are cheaper as well. His tank isn't even 20" deep. He could prolly get away with a 60. Just sayin...

To the OP, go out and pick up a used camera with a kit lens. Learn to use it. You can take tank pics with it, just not really close up. This will give you time to learn to use the camera. A DSLR is not a point and shoot. Though they have an automatic setting, it won't work well when you start taking pics of your tank. Forget about the macro for now. See if you really want to learn how to use a DSLR before going that far.

Alright, that makes sense. I didn't know it was that much different. I'll be looking for some used ones and then at some point I'll save for a macro. I just want some nicer pictures compared to an iPhone.

Read the stickys above. Later, if you really want to go that far, you'll realize you're gonna need more than just a macro. A good tripod, shutter release, and software. You'll need to spend time learning and practicing. Good luck.

Ive been reading two of them, the macro one and choosing a dslr. I'll update whenever I get a camera. I probably won't be too picky, and I'll take one on craigslist that is in my price range.
