Camera?

I was wandering if someone might have some feed back on the best camera to buy in the price range of $250-500. I'd prefer to stay on the bottom end of that range but if the options far out weigh what I can get on the top end possibly I'd be willing to go that high. I'm really clueless when it comes to camera's one thing I would like to have is the ability to zoom in fairly close for the pictures that give the fine detail of corals and such. I'm not sure if there is a camera in my range that can do that. Thanks for all your input

I just bought a Canon G9 for 450.00 you can probably find one even cheaper but I really like it, it has a good close zoom but what I really like is it can shoot in RAW mode where you have the capability to do basically whatever you want in post processing your photo anyway i am a canon guy so that would be my choice good luck and enjoy your new toy

i just bought a canon digital rebel with kit lens on craigslist for $150. the 18-55mm kit lens is not the greatest lens, but works in a pinch. i see other digital rebels like mine (6.3 MP) for anywhere from $150-400 with lens all the time. it is a decent camera that can use any eos lenses so it leaves many options available.

I'm not sure if you want to jump into the DSLR world... they're bigger, arguably more finicky and can lead to spending more $$ !

On the other hand, so so worth it.

Camera shmamera, if you buy either one of these, you WILL spend $xxxx on lenses...AFTER that $400 camera. I have about $3000 invested just in lenses and am not even half way there. Get a powershot.

for general tank shots, you could get away with buying a used macro lens for a few hundred $$ and take far better shots and be happier and more satisfied than using just about any p&s. say you buy a dslr body for $300 and a zoom macro for $300 for a total of $600. you have a camera/lens package that will take amazing shots & the camera actually allows you to take the picture when you press the shutter button (no lag). good luck finding a p&s that will fit that bill. my experiences with p&s cameras is the shutter lag is horrible on most. the dslr will have more flexibilty especially when you get better and more comfortable with shooting. instead of having to buy a new camera a couple years down the road because the p&s has limited settings or wont do what you want to, all you have to do is buy a new lens for the dslr to open up more creativity. you will still spend the same amount in the end. just my $.02

^ On seconed thought, that is pretty accurate advise. Just keep in mind, SLR photography is much like reef keeping. Saying you want to spend $250-500 for an Xt or Xsi is like saying you want to spend $250-500 on a tank so you can build a nice reef. $250-500 doesn't get you pumps, skimmers, sumps, heaters, chillers, power heads, and on and on. The photography hobby is no different. I would say they are equally expensive. I have around $5000 invested in bodies, lenses, tripods, heck...just a bag to put it all in could easily run you $200 i.e. my Lowepro CompuTrekker Plus AW. Even thought I have sunk $5000 into cameras, I have my eye on another $10,000 worth of equipment that I am saving a little bit every week to get. I am not trying to scare you away. This is a very entertaining and satisfying hobby, but it is a whole nother hobby all on its own. Just understand what you are getting into!

i totally understand what you are saying. but some people dont get into photography like you do. these days you can have a decent high-end amateur setup for less $$$. buying used can help alot.
if their photograhy is mainly limited to tank related shots, there is no reason you couldnt get by with two lenses, slr body, flash (remote setup) and tripod. and that is if they are pretty serious.

LOL. Soooooo true. I dare not add up my kit at this point. It rivals my 560g system in what it's cost.
