cameras?

I love my Canon PowerShot SD500. It's nice and small and takes excellent pictures. It's well under $500. After tons of research, my husband and I became convinced that It's the best digital camera for the money.

Hope that helps.

I have one of the Nikon Coolpix - and I regret purchasing it. It takes pictures fine, but it ergonomically horrible! I have owned a couple of Olympus in the past, and like them.

I have a nice Olympus Stylus 4.0 megapixel. I bought it because it was small (fits in my purse), I had an Olympus 35mm before which I loved, this one is a "sport model" supposedly water resistant, and my price range at the time was a couple hundred. I really like it, but I can't get excellent photos of my tank inhabitants - and that seems to be what I want to photograph most.

My fiance did his research on Consumer Reports. He has a Kodak Easy Share DX7630. It is 6.1 megapixels, and it takes very nice tank shots. For a comparison, you can look at my thread "ID help please". The first photo (green background) I took with my camera. The second photo, I took with Len's Kodak. Each was taken through a 10x magnifying lens. [That was something I learned in my past line of work, when I used to take a lot of photos through a microscope & sometimes had to improvise 'cause I didn't always have the proper equipment.]

The only downside I've found with the Kodak is that there is no Mac compatible software, so I can't download his pics to my computer. He has to download them to his Dell, then e-mail them to me.

Oh, and I hear that there are 10.0 megapixel cameras out now which just might leave us in the dust with our 4 to 6 megapixels!

While I have not had a chance to play with it too much my folks just bought a Nikon coolpix P1. It seems great for the little I have got to use it. They had them at Costco for around $300 well under the $500 retail price wich made it a steel for a 8.0 megapixel camera.

I want good macro shots and I know you have to be able to control white balance etc for good tank shots...plus be able to use filters....so...keep bring advice...and it be great if you could post pics

I bought a Kodak C340 at around Christmas time. I think it was in the 250 range.. The size of memory card you buy with it determines more cost. It's 5 mp. This camera is GREAT. It has lots of automatic functionality and a sweet macro setting. I havent gotten into the manual functions all that much. One thing to consider is BATTERY LIFE. My camera before this one was an HP. Four AA's were gone in litterally minutes! The Kodak kicks but in the battery department. It takes 2AA and they last for way longer than I could have even hoped.

Here's some samples.. The only retouching done is re-sizing for web use.

Sherie,
Can you just plug in the camera to a USB port and have it detected as a "USB Storage Device" on the Macintosh? How about using an external memory card reader? I rarely install the software that comes with digital cameras because their software usually clutter my system with junk software.

I'm right there with you Minh! All that bundled crap that comes with cameras and such is so lame. Pretty soon your machine takes an hour to boot with all that garbage loading up in the systray.

I love Canon, this one is pretty sweet:

Image stabilized, great zoom (for a non-removable lens), 6 megapix, if I was you, and didn't want to shell out more money for a DSLR, I'd go with this. and it's $500. just have to wait till the end of the month. I think you'd be happy with it....

Most of my old shots were taken with a Canon A-85 and they look pretty good. this S3 would undoubtebly kick its butt....

Here are some samples with my lesser camera (A-85), If you get the S3 I'll volunteer some time to help you get good shots if needed :)
