Can anyone identify this sps?

It is but it is in bad shape. I hope to revive it a bit and he gets it back minus a frag. My tank will not grow zoas like his and his will not grow SPS like mine for some strange reason. So he has started "fixing" my zoas and I am trying to help him "fix" his sps. I gave him a frag of blue hornets at the swap and there was 5 or 6 tiny polyps. They had not grown much in my tank in the past few months. I got them back from Chris last weekend and there is 9 polyps the size of a penny and 5 babies sprouting. He doesnt know this yet but I am taking him several more frags on my next trip south. My CARs, Rastas, VDMs, adn space monsters all need fixing.

When he got your tank he gave me almost one frag of everything that was in there. It has been growing in my new tank since March and most of it is doing good. I have a nice little colony of Tyree pink lemonade.

I wish we could figure out the differences in our tanks and find a happy middle ground.... Any suggestions?

May be water quality. Zoas seem to do better in dirtier water with less flow, less light, while SPS like clean pristine water, high flow, high light. My zoas don't grow as well either when I focus on my SPS. Not sure, but that a wild guess. Maybe putting your zoas in a shaded spot with less flow, and target feed them cyclops or something with your pumps off few times a week.

Where have you been hiding Mike? We have been reefing in Hernando for years until I moved away. Chris still lives there. We can do some trading I bet!

I have tried everything Jay but not in a while. I may give it another shot. You know how much light and flow your old tank has???

It had a good bit of light and flow (two MP-40's and three 250w halides), but I had my "zoa island" over in a far corner of the tank by itself, where it didn't get as much flow and light as the rest of the tank. I guess this is like golf. You hit your driver straight, but putt terrible. Or you work on your putting and then your driving goes to crap. Guess the same here, improve zoas and hurt SPS or vice versa.....ha. No, I'm sure there is a good balance somewhere. There are lots of people growing great zoas in their SPS tanks. Just gotta figure out the balance I suppose. My SPS is looking great right now, but my zoas are stagnant.

Haha if this was like golf my tank would be black!!! Played last weekend and wow crooked driver straight putts... Lets never reference golf on here again please!

Does it have anything to do with chemical warfare?

Golf is my second passion along with reefing. :)

I don't think zoas put out enough chemicals to affect SPS or vice versa. I know leathers/mushrooms are not great chemical wise for SPS tanks, but I am pretty sure zoas are ok. Guess I need to start googling....

I just did some google searching and most people were saying that SPS and zoanthids do fine together and have no chemical issues. Leathers are a different issue though.

Ive been in and out do to working more than I like, Jabo. Ive never had a problem keeping zoos with sps except sometimes they take over too much realstate....

I have heard that about zoas and dirty water before too. I tested my water last week though and Ammonia and Nitrites were 0 and Nitrate was 5ppm. I think my problem was not being totally familiar with the bio pellets. I don't believe I was feeding near enough for an ULNS. I took them off line a little over a month ago. I'm going back to basics with the chaeto, at least from now. My SPS has been growing and coloring back up. The purple monti cap was completely gone and has now started coming back. I have had better luck overall with zoas though other than the occasional odd melt out of the blue. Jay I need to get you a Space Monster fragged I have plenty. I need to get a frag of those Tropicanna Spinners that you got from me. I moved mine a few weeks ago and they apperently didn't like it at all.

Cant speak for other leathers, I have a huge neon scoly surrounded by pearlberry, tricolor and purple rain and no ill effects all do ok. As far as zoas go never had any issues with sps. I do however turn my pelletts off for a day once a month and run carbon for the day to combat warfare, not sure if it helps but thats my routine.

Scoly? I'm thinking of the LpS scoly.... There is scoly leather?

Oh, I think everyone in Memphis has had a piece of the same neon green sarco at some point...ha. I think it was Cathy Peck that had all the sarco babies?
