Good afternoon everybody! I recieved this fish a while back as a gift from someone that shouldn't have been buying fish for my tank to begin with, and couldn't remember what it was called shortly after buying it (and dropping it into my tank without my knowledge, all sorts of wrong with this person). Can anyone tell me what kind of fish this is? It also used to have a full tail, but slowly it disappeared, it seemed to be some kind of infection, I figured it would have died a while ago but the infection seems to have stopped and the fish is still kicking. So any kind of identification assistance would be appreciated! Thanks all!

Sergeant major damselfish. They get about 6" long and can be kind of aggressive, but they're (IMO) worth a space of their own. Sometimes they aren't all that aggressive... Depends on tankmates. What do you have with it?
Could it have had fin rot?

Fin rot would be my guess. Tank mates are all okay with it, I have a list of inverts, a few blue and yellow damsels, a dwarf lion, a clown, a few mandarins, and a yellow tang that seems to be the enforcer to keep the sergeant major damsel under control. They all seem to get along, and the only issues I get from my sergeant major is being a bit of a pig and eating my lions food. It just started bugging me that I had no idea what it was other than a food junkie. Thank you so much!

Then it sounds like you're lucky and you got a peaceful one.

A few mandarins? How large is your tank? Are you feeding them something special?
And I'd be worried that the lion might eat the mandarins. You'd be surprised what they can swallow.
