Can anyone tell me where to get sand locally?

I am looking to purchase a bunch of sand. I have been looking for the "Southdown Sand" but I have not seen it anywhere. I have called a bunch of the Home depots around here and no one seems to have any. Does anyone know of any stores fairly locally that would have some? Any help you can give would be awesome.

Thanks
Jeremy

Home Depot in JC had it a few years back when I was buying it. It's in the gardening section, so perhaps because of the time of year they don't stock it.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I think the only sand you'll find around here is play sand (kolorscape) unless you pay the premium at a LFS.

Yup kolorscape is about it unless you know someone who has a bag of the good stuff under lock and key. (I wish i had a few)
I had kolorscape in my old tank and it seemed to work ok but i did not like it. I wont use it again. I sprang for agranite this time.
Its a piece of mind issue more than anything else. Starting a new tank invovles a huge gamble as to its coming of age gracefully or fighting you tooth and nail the whole way. When it wants to fight you the worst thing you can have in your tank is an unknown like kolorscape for instance. If your having troubles and dont know what the problem is you for sure will look to the cheep sand you got at homedepot. Its just not worth it IMO. Lessons learned the hard way. Lots have used it including me and all I can say for sure was I didnt like it.

I would love to find some of that sand locally but it is not looking good. lol.. Well I will have to figure out something.

I went to the LFS to get mine, it's the only place to get aragonite sand that I know of. Southdown Sand and Yardright tropical play sand are things of the past now. The story I read claims that Southdown and Yardright sands came from Caribsea but once Caribsea saw they were losing sales of their aquarium sand to Southdown and Yardright they stopped supplying it to them. According to this source all sand and base rock that leaves the Caribbean goes through them. Since they have a monopoly that is why it is so expensive. I don’t know if the story is true but it seems believable IMO. Anyway I looked for two years for some cheep aragonite sand and it simply could not be had. Looks like we are stuck buying the expensive stuff for now :(

The old south down has a different name and package (but it is the same stuff) still sold at home depot - I have half a bag at home. I will look at the name tonight and post it

Not trying to be a jerk but it's probably not the same stuff unless it is really old or they just starting carrying it in the last few months. I was looking for sand this summer and home depot didn't have anything that even remotely resembled south down.

I think the name of the new southdown sand is called yardright. I still could not find any sand that would work at all and I have been to 4 Home depots and called most of the ones in the rochester and syracuse areas. I think it is gonna be sand from the pet stores for me.

Order it online. Much cheaper. Dr F and S has 30lb bags of araganite for $22. thats not bad. If your looking for sand for that 44 then 1 maybe 2 bags is all youll need. $44 plus maybe $10 shipping.

I have about 120 lbs of live sand sitting in my tank...I bought it from the LFS just as plain old sand...but it was in my tank for about 18 months. It has been in the tank since I had my flood (just has a little water keeping it wet).

I have been trying to sell it off...are you interested in some?? It is good sand...let me know.

The playsand at Home Depot is the same thing. It is labeled as Pavestone this year. There are two versions at the Ithaca Home Depot. I was there on Friday. They have a regular playsand which is the normal brown/tan stuff and then there is the premium "Tropical Playsand" which seems to be similar to the Kolorscape/Southdown/Old Castle.

I assume the other Home Depots will also have.
