Can Corraline take over zoa polyps?

Hey guys,

I've got a couple polyps of Tubbs blues that was a much bigger colony ... but it looks as though a few of the polyps have literally been taken over by the coralline on the rock they are mounted to.

There are a few areas where its almost like you can see where the coralline raises where a polyp once was.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of a polyp losing a battle to algae?

I have heard of other forms of algae, (hair, bryopsis, slime, bubble) taken over polyps but i have never heard coraline taking over zoas.

I have never seen coralline take over zooanthids. I have it all over my tank and never had this problem. Maybe you have a little critter you don't know about eating them?.?. Good luck

Never heard or seen coralline take over, maybe they're dying or something is eating them and then the coralline progresses? Post a picture would be interesting to see.

I have a plating kind of coralline that's done something similar a few times, I just chipped it back a bit and the zoanthids overgrew it.

I had some polyps affected for a short period of time by strong/fast coralline growth.
The coralline pushed the base of the polyps and then the polyps closed for a while until it could overgrow the algae, after couple weeks.
That must happen in the wild as well. Not so common.
Not a big deal most of the time.

I've never had coralline actually growing on the polyps themselves, if that's what you've meant.

Pics?

Grandis.
