Can fish be picked up at your facility-split from thread in Reef Fishes

Hi Kevin,

Is it possible to do a will call and pick up an order of live fish from your Calif. facility? We are looking for a Powder Blue Tang and several anthias. I'd rather pick them up than have them shipped.

Also, is Jakarta considered a far away or closer collection site? I am trying to find out where our local fish come from so that I can make better decisions.

Thank you for your time. This has been very educational.

Joyce,
I am always happy to help shed some light on the Marine Fish Industry and it’s a pleasure for me to speak about the chain of custody of marine fish in the Reef Fishes Forum here on RC.

Unfortunately we do not offer any Will Call service from California. A few options on shipping aquatic life to you can be to have the package held at your local FedEx hub for pick up by you at around 9:30 AM. We also offer Saturday delivery if you are unable to accept deliveries during the week.

There are several good exporters in Jakarta Indonesia and Denpasar Bali, which are both giant distribution/export locations for marine aquarium fish. Due to the fact that there are so many collectors, middlemen, and exporters in these countries, and depending on the species of fish you are looking for, the chances that numerous people have handled the fish before they are even exported is far more likely.

There are other areas that are more direct sources for livestock, where the time between harvesting the fish until they are sitting in filtered water at the export stations are much shorter. These areas include Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Hawaii, and Christmas Islands to name a few.

Sincerely,
