Can frags go into a fresh empty tank?

I wont have my tank up & cycled b4 the frag auction. Can I set up my tank with no rock or fish & put in coral? I will have light & flow, just no fish or LR.

Thx
Craig

I would vote "no" on that. Cycling involves spiking the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. I don't think corals (or frags) appreciate that any more than fish and inverts do. Maybe someone can hold your frags for you until your tank is 0/0/0 or something close to it.

I guess I should clarify my idea. I was going to set up my 75 to hold frags until my 125 was up & going & cycled

Oh, well that doesn't sound like a problem. I'm sure you've got other filtration already going on your 75 FOWLR.

With as low a bioload is it'd be, I would think it would be no problem. I'd think it'd be easier to con one of those other w'loo guys to hold them for you until your tank is up and running, though.

I set up a tank one time, and kinda rushed things. I had some frags that i needed to hold, no fish, also had chaeto, and DT's phytoplankton. I had to water running for a few days, threw everything in. I dosed phytoplankton. things came around just fine. The bioload was very low to begin with. And i think the chaeto and phytoplankton helped buffer any nitrogen cycle. I never did see a spike in the amonia or nitrate/nitrites. I kept anything that would rot, out of the tank. i never doesed any zooplankton (ie rotifers or frozen foods).

i did keep a close eye on the basics: amonia, nitrite, and nitrates. and also did atleast one water change within seven days too.

would i do this again.. probably never. But i was kind of in a pinch.

Hey craig if you want some water let me know.....i do 30gal water changes every 2 to 3 weeks so if you want it you can have it.....or i can dump it down the toliet like normal

Used water would make this work easily. Otherwise you need to just do water changes to keep the ammonia in check. Be sure to acclimate them to your ultra clean water and bright light as these will be your biggest issues to contend with. Otherwise this is just a really big QT tank.
