Can I add another clown?

I have a 180 tank, fish are:

Blue Hippo Tang
Kole Tang
Melanarus Wrasse
Sunburst Anthia
Magnificent Foxface

And my gold stripe Maroon clown. Hosts in an RBTA.

I know Maroons are aggressive. Am I basically taking a huge risk if I try to find a mate? If I'm dead set on a pair, am I better served buying a mated pair and getting rid of my current fish? I do like my maroon, even though he/she is a tyrant, but then, most maroons are. :)

Thanks for any and all input.

Your best option would be to find a tiny, and I mean an inch or so juvie maroon clown. I have had a lot of success pairing maroons by adding the smallest male I can with a large female.

Since it sounds like she is in a nice sized tank with a good host anemone, she is likely in very good health and therefore the biological imperative to reproduce will be the first thing on her mind. So the chances are greatly in your favor that she will welcome the chance of a mate.

Now thats not to say she may not put him through hell, but after she is done testing him, if he reacts appropriately things should work out well.

Good luck and keep us updated.

I think this can be done I had a pair in my tank they were WSM and I also had a clarkii in there bad idea the clarkii was really mean as she was bigger than both . So what I had to do was get a big GSM (female)to take place of the WSM female witch I got rid of and now I have a male WSM and a Female GSM I think it can be done

I highly recommend you find a mate for it, really adds to the tank.
Just get a small juvy, and intro in a floating container like you get at petco or LFS.
Float it and observe the female, either she will look interested, or she'll look like she can't wait to kill it.
Might not work first try or two or even more w/ maroons, but you may get lucky first go.

X2 on what Davocean said . It is so cool to watch them both

Thanks for the input all. I'll try to find a small male, and see what happens. Current is a gold stripe, does it matter if the second is white vs. gold? (splitting hairs here?)

I do not think it will mater at all most likey the small one will end up a male and it will have white stripes and i think as it gets older they will change colors i think .. Check out capistrano reef in san juan they have a few small maroons .]

Give Chris a call at Capistrano Reef Great guy I just got off the phone with him and they have one right now as we speak . Here is there info .

Thanks for the heads up. Called, Chris is holding the fish, and I'll happen to be in the area tonight, so I'm looking forward to checking out the store. I'll let you guys know how it works out. I'm just going to put the new guy in a fish trap for a few hours, (it's the large trap) and see how female reacts.

Okay, I have the juvy male, acclimated him, and he's now in my display, but in a fish trap. My maroon is not paying any attention to the new guy at all. Nothing aggressive. Occasionally, she'll look at it, kinda swim above, and then go back to her nem. Other times she'll just swim the tank and not pay it any mind. How long should I keep the juvy in the trap? Should I release him yet?

I would let Him go and see how it turns out . If it gets out of hand put him back in for a day half a day . They are going to fight a liitle or maybe you will get lucky like i did and they wil just take to each other . Keep us all posted . By the way what did you think of the capistrano reef ?

Okay, I'll see how goes! I really liked Capistrano reef! Their display tanks are awesome. The large shark tank in front is sooo awesome, and I don't care for shark tanks, it's just great set up.

Staff was friendly. Chris is a nice guy. Coral prices were a tad on the high side, but I get it, it's San Juan, and they have a big rent check to cut I'm sure. They had lots of knick knack things too, USEFUL things. Just a really put together place. I will for sure be going back, and probably often!

great im glad you like the place . So you have any pic yet up your new maroon

No pics yet, but will soon. Okay, so far, so good. Released the male, he went straight the nem. Female nudged him a little bit, almost playfully. No aggression at all. Right now though, she's camped at the bottom, he's at the top. It's just a trip to see the difference in size. She takes up 3/4 of the nem, he takes about two tentacles. He's just so tiny! It's almost more fun to watch the male, he just swims in between tentacles and gets lost in there.

That is Awesome.. I can't wait to see the difference in size.

Very cool, I probably would have floated a little longer, but if she isn't attacking, most likely cool, especially if she allowed into her nem.
Usually aggression on intro is immediate, so probably cool.
Pics.
