Can I build a reef with this lighting?

I recently bought a used tank that came with the 96w light setup here:

Can I put coral under this lighting? I don't demand to have hard corals, I can happily live with zoo's and other soft corals. Its 4 x 96 w floresent in a 6' 125g tank.

I think you should be fine with low-light corals (zoos, shrooms). You might have to experiment with placement....on the sand or higher up on the rocks to see where they will do the best.

Does this mean I can only grow coral in top X inches, or just that I will need to expeiment with how different types grow at differnt levels?

Zoos you would want from the middle to the top but you could probably put mushrooms in the sand if you wanted to it has to do with the light requirments of each coral type.

look for corals from fellow reefers that have been grown out in similar lighting.

you'll be fine with most softies and even some LPS. Zoas, button polyps, maybe even some brains, hammer, torch, etc. Higher placement in the tank, the better. Steer clear of SPS and clams though.
