Hello. I am thinking of joining the hobby of a saltwater aquarium. However, I can't set up a larger aquarium because I'll be going off to college soon and my parents won't take care of it. Any suggestions? I also would mind a lid to help with evaporation because my schedule can get pretty busy. And around 30 gallons so I can fit a few Clownfish in there. Thanks guys

When you say going off to college, I will assume you are not living at home and a commute to school. My suggestion is don't do it. First your dorm probably don't allow pets. Second moving a SW tank from one place to another is not as simple as moving a FW tank. You will be moving every summer and fall. If you hate your roommate, you will be moving in the middle of the year.

Agreed. You also have to keep.in mind limiting evaporation also limits air exchange at the surface which will caise you issues. The tanks require some maintenance and dedication. Take it from somone who tried to start a 29g in college.... It didnt go well.

Save the money and wiat until you can not worry about the commitment.

So you guys are saying to just wait until I'm out of college and save money for a bigger tank? Or stick with the smaller one but still wait until after college?

I am in the wait camp. Just starting out in college also means living on a budget. You can go with simple in this hobby and do just fine, but even that comes with expences. There is also a time commitment, especially with a new tank - until it matures. Good things in this hobby come slow and steady, bad things happen overnight if you don't keep on top of eveything.

My advise is to wait.

I agree that you should wait. When i started college my tank went to hell. You wont have the time and patience for keeping it going.
