Can I have.......

So I'm still in the build phase with the 180 and I know it will be a bit before fish. I've also got a small 30 gal for QT.

But.....

I want to know...can I have a Hippo, Powder Blue, Purple, Yellow and Naso Tang??

The tangs are my favourites. I'm pretty sure I'm pushing it with this wish list. I plan on adding all my 'peaceful' fish first (blennies & gobies). And all of my cleaner shrimp, etc.

I know I can do whatever, but the question is whether I should

I would do naso powder blue ,yellow ,and hippo ,at the same time, purple would come last and small.... they're all feasible it just depends on how you add them

Really??? That's wonderful!! I thought it would be too much.

Something to look forward to in probably another 4 or 5 months once I'm cycled and everyone else is in. Yay!!

Personally, that's too many tangs for a tank that size. The hippo and naso will get very large. I have a naso in my 300 and cannot imagine keeping him in anything any smaller.

Ah. Okay. So if I did the yellow & purple. Would I be better with a powder blue or powder brown? I like them equally but read the powder brown isn't always reef safe?

Tangs range from mostly reef safe to absolutely reef safe, including the powder brown/blue ones. The typical issue that most folks encounter with tangs other than putting a species that gets too big in too small of a tank is aggression towards other tank mates, and introducing ich. More so than other fish, tangs tend to come from distributors/stores infected with cryptocaryon irritans (saltwater ich).

With very, very few exceptions, all fish should go through an effective quarantine period under the watchful eye of the owner, but with tangs, this is especially true.

For this reason, and unless you can buy your tangs very, very small (less than 2"), you may have issues trying to QT all of them and introduce all of them at once. With respect to QT, I'd encourage you to consider keeping an eye out for the Petco $ per gallon sale, and set up a 20 gallon QT at the very smallest, and a 40g breeder QT if you're going to try to house multiple tangs at one time in quarantine.
